Environment:Start Time: 7:00 AM Temperature: 61 degrees Sky: Sunshine, no breeze A much nicer day for casual birding while waling in the park. Less haze, more sun, less humidity and more birds made for an excellent morning. Though there were not many of the larger birds around I did get a shot of a Flicker and a Juvenile American Robin. The real highlight was when I caught sight of a Long-billed Thrasher rummaging through some of the low brush along the Arkansas River. Not that I knew at the time that it was a Long-billed Thrasher – I only determined…

Environment:Start Time: 7:10 AM Temperature: 66 degrees Sky: Heavy wildfire haze, no breeze Today’s walk turned a little tedious this morning because of a higher level of humidity. It wasn’t so bad at first but as the sun rose above the fire haze it got pretty uncomfortable. Once again, there was lots of bird chatter but not many of them were willing to show themselves for digital immortalization. I did manage a few frames of a passing Cormorant which is the featured image of the day. Sightings:Birds: Osprey, Barn Swallows, Starlings, Mallard Ducks, Flicker, Robins, Great Blue Heron, Blue Jay,…

Environment:Start Time: 7:00 AM Temperature: 60 degrees Sky: Mostly Sunny, light breeze A very nice day for a walk in the woods. Though the visible bird activity was a bit disappointing the chatter was non-stop. I really wish I was better at identifying bird calls. The only ones I have down are Osprey, Blue Jay and generic Hawk. If a Heron makes a squawk I can usually recognize that too. With all that being said I did get a couple of nice shots of Osprey activity and another of a Great Blue Heron working the Arkansas River. I also got…

Environment:Start Time: 6:55 AM Temperature: 58 degrees Sky: Scattered Sunshine, light breeze After skipping yesterday’s outing due to heavy cloud cover I had high hopes for this morning. There were some clouds in the East interfering with the Sun but I thought the old guy would rise above the problem. Well, he made a good effort but in the end the clouds won. It was no big loss since the wildlife activity both on the ground and in the air was pretty sparse. I spotted an Owl early on but he vanished into the trees. Just like my last outing,…

Environment:Start Time: 7:05 AM Temperature: 60 degrees Sky: Scattered Clouds, light breeze I decided on a change of pace this morning once I saw the sky. It was full of well defined fluffy white clouds which made me want to shoot more scenic pictures. So I put my vintage Olympus Zuiko 14-54mm zoom (a lens I have yet to write up in this blog) on the Panasonic GX-85 and went looking for scenery. What I settled on was not exactly what you think about when the word “scenery” comes up. I went to the Osprey Picnic Area on the eastern…

Environment:Start Time: 7:15 AM Temperature: 64 degrees Sky: Scattered Clouds, light breeze The concerns about the absence of birds and critters at Lake Pueblo State Park I expressed yesterday were soothed somewhat today with the appearance of a number of my avian friends. I got chances to shoot a hairy woodpecker and a white-breasted nuthatch but my efforts were not successful. There were a number of what I call “flitty” birds – those are the ones that flit from branch to branch not stopping long enough to be either identified or photographed. The day was saved by a group of…

Today’s post is going to be a short one. We started out at 7 AM in 61 degrees. Another great environment for wildlife photography. The only thing missing was the wildlife. I’m really getting concerned about the scarcity of birds and critters. The only near photo opportunity I had was on the way out of the park when I spotted an Osprey clutching a fish high in a dead tree. I pulled over as soon as I could and headed back on foot to get the shot. I wasn’t 50 yards from the car when my would be subject decided…

Started once again at 6:45 AM. Absolutely no clouds anywhere in sight and just a bit of wind. Weather forecast is calling for 100+ degrees and I’d say we had a good start at 63. When you get a day with the great light available this morning it is always disappointing to not find cooperative subject matter. I saw plenty of birds in flight but the only bird that was within reach is the White-breasted Nuthatch that is today’s featured image. Sightings:Birds: Osprey, Starlings, Cormorants, Great Blue Heron, Mallard Ducks, White-breasted Nuthatch, Barn SwallowsCritters: None Gear: Lumix GX-85, 100-300mm

August 06, 2020

Another stellar morning. Essentially clear skies, 60 degrees and no wind as we set out at 6:45. Really a lot of bird activity today. I started out by going back to the spot where I saw the Green Heron yesterday. He was not there but I did get some shots of another Wren and a Great Horned Owl. Then for the second act of the day’s outing I first went by the Osprey nest (nothing happening) and then circled around to the fishing pond. On that route I got pictures of a Viceroy Butterfly (today’s featured image), a Field Sparrow,…

Bright sunshine was the order of the morning. We got going at 6:45 in a calm, hazy 59 degrees. Overall the walk this morning was quite uneventful. I changed my plans on a trekking venue because I saw two Osprey reeling over the Arkansas River. I hoped they were on a fishing trip so I headed over to the river. I guess they saw me coming because it was just me and the river when I got in position. So from there I just headed up river in hopes of finding an owl. I had two encounters with Mule Deer,…
