Environment:Start Time: 2:40 PM Temperature: 60 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, light breeze The last day of November turned to be another perfect walking day and it started out with great promise. As I drove into the park I saw an American Bald Eagle flying West toward the Lake Pueblo Dam from the Rock Canyon area where I normally walk. I was hoping that he had left some friends behind but I walked my full tour without spotting another Eagle. In fact I saw very few birds at all. I heard an owl hooting loudly in the Osprey Picnic area…

Environment:Start Time: 12:25 PM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze Today’s featured birds are Red-Tailed Hawks. I saw very few other birds on my normal tour. I did have a chance at a Great Blue Heron who was perched in a tree but when I veered off the trail to get a better angle s/he took off with a loud squawk that I can’t help but feel was directed right at me. After that encounter the only other photographic opportunities I saw were the Red-Tails. Okay, okay there were some Mallard Ducks in the river and the…

Environment:Start Time: 10:20 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, moderate breeze Happy Thanksgiving! I was surprised to find a lot of human activity at Lake Pueblo State Park this morning. Perhaps I should start taking pictures of dog walkers and fishermen since the birds and critters are really getting scarce. As always, I was really hoping to get a photo of an Eagle or possibly a Western Bluebird. As always, it didn’t happen. In fact I only took one photo today and that is today’s featured image above. What is it? Well I didn’t know what it was…

Environment:Start Time: 2:10 PM Temperature: 48 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze The day started in a shroud of fog and a good layer of frost. I Finally made it out to Lake Pueblo State Park in the mid-afternoon when the conditions were much improved. This time of year the Sun angle in the afternoon is still low enough to allow for decent photo opportunities. Once again, the bird population did not take advantage of this useful light. So today’s featured image is of a group of White-Crowned Sparrows. Posted below is a Ring-Billed Gull making a landing on…

Environment:Start Time: 10:40 AM Temperature: 41 degrees Sky: Sunny, high thin clouds, intermittent breeze Another cold morning delayed my start today. Though it finally did break into the forties the air was quite crisp and when a breeze hit you, even in the Sun, you shuttered. Even so I took a long walk today since I skipped yesterday. I did not come home with much to show for my efforts, though. The only birds that were in capture range were a couple of American Coots. One American Kestrel was perched high up on a dead tree just far enough away…

Environment:Start Time: 9:35 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny, high thin clouds, moderate breeze Starting to get cool again. Temperature kept me waiting this morning but finally decided to break into the forties so I could walk. Even at the lower temp it was a great day to walk. I can’t say the same for bird or scenic photography. Not that I came home empty handed. Posted below is about the best shot of Bufflehead Ducks that I’ve been able to capture. This group was far enough away that they didn’t feel obligated to fly away the second I arrived…

Environment:Start Time: 8:20 AM Temperature: 64 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, moderate breeze Crazy warm this morning. Don’t know if it was this “heat” but there was not a lot happening along the Arkansas River today. I did see a Red-Tailed Hawk circling high in the sky. While I stood hoping s/he would coast my way I noticed that s/he was not alone up there. A smaller bird was vigorously harassing the hawk. I was not sure of the kind of bird the attacker was but it crossed my mind, when I saw its silhouette as he swung around to…

Environment:Start Time: 8:20 AM Temperature: 44 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, no breeze Yet another perfect day for a walk by the river. There was a wide variety of birds this morning most of whom had better things to do than pose for my camera. I chased a marauding band of Bushtits who were pillaging the rabbitbrush along the bank of the Arkansas River. Those suckers are quick. One of the fuzzy frames I captured is posted below along with a pretty nice shot of three Canada Geese coming in for a landing at the fishing pond. The lack of…

Environment:Start Time: 8:35 AM Temperature: 42 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, no breeze Still hitting the trail in the low angle morning light. Not sure what is happening with the birds – things sure are quiet at Lake Pueblo State Park. There were a few more deer out and about and the squirrels were pretty frisky – if I have to stoop to taking pictures of squirrels I may just stay home. The walk was not a total loss because I spotted two American Coot swimming with some Mallards in the Arkansas River. Counting me that made three Coots at…

Environment:Start Time: 9:25 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, no breeze Warm weather continues to tarnish November’s reputation. Birds and critters are still playing hard to get. The Mule Deer took the day off but the Squirrels were taking up the slack – I saw more of them this morning than I normally do in a week. I don’t consider the walk a wash, though, because I got to see an Eagle! My first of the season. I didn’t get a photo today because he was at a high altitude and apparently late for an appointment – but…
