Environment:Start Time: 10:25 AM Temperature: 42 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, moderate breeze Moderate temperatures this morning allowed me to get out to Lake Pueblo State Park for a morning walk. Conditions were as close to perfect as you could ask for. Though the bird activity was disappointingly low the Mule Deer were out in force showing off their Winter coats. Today’s featured image (above) is one of many frames captured. The photos at the end of this post contain another deer image (a manly looking buck) and a new bird for my personal sightings list – a Ring-Billed Gull….

Environment:Start Time: 1:35 PM Temperature: 62 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, moderate wind I had intended on taking a long walk this afternoon but a pesky, persistent wind made me go for a shorter walk instead. It was just as well since the wind was keeping the majority of birds grounded. One Red-Tailed Hawk was really enjoying the wind as he rode the currents coming up off of the Rock Canyon bluffs. I managed only one shot of him (a fuzzy one at that) before he glided off to the South along the Arkansas River. The only other shot I…

Environment:Start Time: 12:30 PM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, light breeze After several days of dicey weather and a rather cold morning I finally managed to make it out to Lake Pueblo State Park this afternoon. Gorgeous day for walking about. Apparently it was not such a great day for flying about – since the avian activity was very subdued. The walk started out with a little excitement – I got a fuzzy shot of a Western Bluebird right off the bat. I have been identifying these birds as Mountain Bluebirds but further research has shown me the…

Environment:Start Time: 8:05 AM Temperature: 42 degrees Sky: Sunny, high clouds, light breeze November is starting to return with cooler morning temperatures. I’m sure it won’t be long until I am walking regularly in the afternoons. Today produced an even mix of big and small birds with neither size making a real effort to be captured by my camera. I saw a (probably the same one as yesterday) Red-Tailed Hawk perched high in a tree way across the river. I did the best I could with what was offered. For excitement I saw that the Bufflehead Ducks are starting to…

Environment:Start Time: 8:20 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, light breeze Warm again this morning. A bit of a breeze was fluttering those leaves with the fortitude to still be on their tree. Yesterday I had many opportunities to chase the smaller birds around but today things were much quieter. The smallest bird I managed to shoot was a Hairy Woodpecker, though I have to admit I passed on a couple of White-Crowned Sparrows who were doing their best to be photographed. My luck was better with bigger birds today. I spotted a Red-Tailed Hawk early on the…

Environment:Start Time: 8:10 AM Temperature: 56 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, light wind Pleasant weather persists at Lake Pueblo State Park. Small birds continue to be the most available, of those, Sparrows seem to be the most willing to be photographed. I got a good series of a Song Sparrow who took pity on me and sat still for a while. I hope no one tells him that I’m not posting any of these shots because I don’t want to have to rename this site HiddenSparrow.com! Big birds were in evidence this morning – I saw both a Red-Tailed Hawk…

Environment:Start Time: 8:30 AM Temperature: 55 degrees Sky: Sunny, fluffy white clouds, light wind Another warm November morning. Quite a few white clouds and a wind strong enough to require me to deploy the chin strap on my hat. I don’t know if the wind was keeping the birds hunkered down but there was very little activity. One Red-Tailed Hawk was out enjoying the wind and could be seen riding the wind currents high up in the sky. The other main players were Belted Kingfishers. I spotted one working the fishing pond just as I got started. I chased him…

Environment:Start Time: 8:50 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze The run of great weather is holding up and is predicted to continue at least through Friday. Looks like I will not have a reason to stay home for a while. The walking conditions were ideal, as were the photographic conditions, but I encountered very few willing subjects along the trail. Once again, I am posting shots of a Kingfisher (below) and a Song Sparrow (above.) Not real exotic. The bigger birds were around this morning – just not within range. Even so I managed to add…

October 31 – Addendum

While looking through my picture archive on the 31st I came across an image that I shot in 2015 on October 31st. It struck me not just because it is a wonderfully colorful Autumn scenic but also because I was able to recognize exactly where I took the shot. The image is the featured image (above) for this post. It shows the wooded area between the Osprey Picnic Area and the Arkansas River. So I decided to dust off my Canon Powershot G12 – the camera I used to take this image in 2015 – and see if I could…

Environment:Start Time: 8:35 AM Temperature: 43 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze Mountain Daylight Time arrived today in fine style. Another great day for a walk by the Arkansas River. I was hoping the birds would feel the same – only flying. Unfortunately, the birds were not of the same mind – especially the bigger birds. No Osprey, Hawks or Eagles. As for the smaller birds it was mostly the usual suspects – Sparrows, Belted Kingfishers and Juncos. Happily I did manage to add a “new” bird to my personal sightings list as well as get an image of…
