Environment:Start Time: 12:50 PM Temperature: 44 degrees Sky: Sunny, high clouds, light breeze This was a great day with which to end 2020. Calm and pleasant. It took most of the morning to get warmed up but it was well worth the wait. I posted up on the South bank of the Arkansas with the thought of doing some more duck video. I did get a couple of videos that I still need to edit so posting them here is going to have to wait. One thing I have to confirm when I work on those files is that I’m…

Environment:Start Time: 2:35 AM Temperature: 44 degrees Sky: Sunshine, light breeze Things are finally warming up around here allowing me to take an afternoon walk. There was a bit of bird activity today but not as much cooperation. I had a good chance to get a smallish Cooper’s Hawk but rather than just take the shot I had – I tried to make a camera setting change which, apparently, was the same idea my intended subject had because he decided to change where he was setting and flew away. You’d think I would learn. I saw a Belted Kingfisher (across…

Environment:Start Time: 10:40 AM Temperature: 57 degrees Sky: Sunshine, light breeze Another fantastic day for a stroll in the park. Since the bird population has been down of late leaving the options to ducks or juncos I decided to concentrate on ducks this morning. Not only that – I decided it would be a good day to try out the video on the GH4. So with tripod in hand I pulled into the parking lot on the South side of the river and headed downriver to see what I could capture. Two of today’s videos are posted below. Not the…

Environment:Start Time: 10:45 AM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunshine, light breeze Merry Christmas. Looking around this morning it was fairly obvious that today would not be a White Christmas. Snow rarely falls with temperatures in the high forties. Great day for walking for sure. The park was not super busy with only a few fishermen (probably trying out new gear) and even fewer walkers or runners (I saw one of each.) Not too many birds, either. I did shoot some images of Goldeneye ducks. Just to be sure, I ran one shot through Google Lens and discovered that these ducks…

Environment:Start Time: 10:30 AM Temperature: 55 degrees Sky: Sunshine, light breeze Weather is still allowing me to make it out in the mornings and today that was important because more wind is in the forecast to be followed by a cold snap. I managed to do the full two mile tour today with few stops for photography. There was a bigger variety of subjects today but none too cooperative. Today’s featured image is of what I believe is a Gadwall Duck. There were around five of them paddling around in the Arkansas River making easy targets for one desperate photographer….

Environment:Start Time: 10:00 AM Temperature: 56 degrees Sky: Sunshine filtered by high clouds, intermittent breeze This is the first day of Winter but you wouldn’t know it by standing at the Anticline Fishing Pond at Lake Pueblo State Park. Snowshoes not required. The pond, which has been frozen over, is starting to thaw but not enough to attract any water fowl back to its calm water. Today’s featured image (above) is a “scenic” shot from the trail along the banks of the Arkansas River. Still some leaves hanging on despite yesterdays buffeting wind. As for birds, they were more plentiful…

December 20, 2020

Environment:Start Time: 1:15 PM Temperature: 55 degrees Sky: Mostly cloudy, blustery breeze Even though the air temperature was warmer than yesterday the lack of steady sunshine and a persistent heavy breeze made for less than ideal walking conditions. Only the Gulls seemed to be enjoying the day while most other birds were hunkered down somewhere out of sight (except for a few ducks.) Though I did get a shot of some Mule Deer grazing out in the weeds there was not much else to shoot. Once again I am posting a featured image straight out of my archive. I found…

Environment:Start Time: 3:05 PM Temperature: 51 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, light breeze Finally suitable weather has returned. It took until late afternoon for the sun and temperature to team up to make for decent walking. Not much going on bird-wise. The fishing pond was frozen over which means my Western Grebe buddy has probably headed South. There were a couple of Starlings still hanging around but they really looked beat up. So I didn’t get much done in terms of photography. The Arkansas River isn’t frozen over so I got a shot of some Common Goldeneye Ducks and a…

December 16, 2020

Environment:Crappy We’ve just had a run of cold and just snowy enough weather to keep me home the last several days. I’ve been anxiously watching the local weather prognosticators and it looks like I may be able to get out to Lake Pueblo State Park tomorrow. It also looks like if I don’t make it tomorrow I will be back on the couch for a few more days since more snow is being forecast for Friday. So, to help loyal readers through this challenging period, I have reached back into my archive to December 2017 to post today’s featured image…

Environment:Start Time: 12:55 PM Temperature: 60 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze Today’s outing started off on a super HIGH note! Out of force of habit I checked out the Osprey nest near the swim area as I drove into Lake Pueblo State Park. These days I don’t know what I’m looking for since all the Osprey have headed South. But the nest was not empty! There were three large birds sitting in and around the nest. I parked as close as I could to the nest and got over there as fast as possible. When I arrived on…
