Environment:Start Time: 10:45 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze This morning I decided to forgo my normal hike in the Rock Canyon area at Lake Pueblo State Park and go, instead, a little further out to the Wildlife Area that is just West of Lake Pueblo. My thinking was that there might be a different variety of birds out in this less peopled landscape. Because I was going to this alternate area I decided to try using a vintage Minolta 200 mm MC Tele Rokkor lens. I figured that any birds I found (really hoping for…

Environment:Start Time:10:40 AM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze I tried changing things up this morning – heading out the door with my vintage Olympus Zuiko 14-54 mm lens attached to my new Lumix GH4 camera. The light over the last couple of days has been amazing so I decided to try some late Autumn “scenic” photography. Even though the major color has faded to a memory, the now mostly bare trees have a certain majesty as they prepare to stand against the fast approaching Winter. Today’s featured image and the one posted below are examples of…

Environment:Start Time: 11:30 AM Temperature: 51 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, light breeze Spectacular weather continues. I’m not sure why the birds are making themselves so scarce. Maybe the continued presence of Red-Tails and Kestrels has something to do with it – not sure. That is not to say that today’s photo efforts went unrewarded. I managed to spot a male Belted Kingfisher perched along the Arkansas River AND on the same side of the river as me! He (it was a male) was quite content to sit on a branch and take in the fine weather. I shot quite…

Environment:Start Time: 11:25 AM Temperature: 52 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze Once again I find the climate amenable to a morning outing. My avian friends, however, did not seem to feel the same way. It was oddly quiet as I executed my normal patrol of the area. The only birds I saw in flight were a Belted Kingfisher and a Flicker – both of whom were heading upriver as I was heading downriver. I did take (and delete) a few frames of a Song Sparrow poking around on the trail’s edge. I also tried a long shot of…

Environment:Start Time: 1:20 PM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, light breeze December opened up this year with two days of frigid temps and some wicked wind. Things have settled down (and warmed up) so I did manage to get out to Lake Pueblo State Park this afternoon. I must say that it was worth the wait – perfect conditions. The icing on the cake came in the form of some pretty decent bird sightings. Very early in the walk I came upon a Great Blue Heron perched in tree near the Anticline Fishing Pond – a very popular…

Environment:Start Time: 2:40 PM Temperature: 60 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, light breeze The last day of November turned to be another perfect walking day and it started out with great promise. As I drove into the park I saw an American Bald Eagle flying West toward the Lake Pueblo Dam from the Rock Canyon area where I normally walk. I was hoping that he had left some friends behind but I walked my full tour without spotting another Eagle. In fact I saw very few birds at all. I heard an owl hooting loudly in the Osprey Picnic area…

Environment:Start Time: 12:25 PM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze Today’s featured birds are Red-Tailed Hawks. I saw very few other birds on my normal tour. I did have a chance at a Great Blue Heron who was perched in a tree but when I veered off the trail to get a better angle s/he took off with a loud squawk that I can’t help but feel was directed right at me. After that encounter the only other photographic opportunities I saw were the Red-Tails. Okay, okay there were some Mallard Ducks in the river and the…

Environment:Start Time: 10:20 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, moderate breeze Happy Thanksgiving! I was surprised to find a lot of human activity at Lake Pueblo State Park this morning. Perhaps I should start taking pictures of dog walkers and fishermen since the birds and critters are really getting scarce. As always, I was really hoping to get a photo of an Eagle or possibly a Western Bluebird. As always, it didn’t happen. In fact I only took one photo today and that is today’s featured image above. What is it? Well I didn’t know what it was…

Environment:Start Time: 2:10 PM Temperature: 48 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, no breeze The day started in a shroud of fog and a good layer of frost. I Finally made it out to Lake Pueblo State Park in the mid-afternoon when the conditions were much improved. This time of year the Sun angle in the afternoon is still low enough to allow for decent photo opportunities. Once again, the bird population did not take advantage of this useful light. So today’s featured image is of a group of White-Crowned Sparrows. Posted below is a Ring-Billed Gull making a landing on…

Environment:Start Time: 10:40 AM Temperature: 41 degrees Sky: Sunny, high thin clouds, intermittent breeze Another cold morning delayed my start today. Though it finally did break into the forties the air was quite crisp and when a breeze hit you, even in the Sun, you shuttered. Even so I took a long walk today since I skipped yesterday. I did not come home with much to show for my efforts, though. The only birds that were in capture range were a couple of American Coots. One American Kestrel was perched high up on a dead tree just far enough away…
