Environment:Start Time: 1:15 PM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunny, high clouds, light breeze We finally got a decent break in the weather and I, along with many others, managed to enjoy a great afternoon at Lake Pueblo State Park. There was a fairly good number of birds as well. In the first five or six hundred yards of my walk I saw Juncos, a woodpecker, a Belted Kingfisher and a Black Phoebe. All just too busy to stop and pose. I’m afraid today’s featured image of a White-breasted Nuthatch is pretty poor in the quality department but that is the…

Environment:Start Time: 1:30 PM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Filtered Sunshine, high clouds, light breeze The weather finally cooperated today and allowed me to get out for a walk at Lake Pueblo State Park. Once again, the local wildlife was tough to find. There were no deer to be seen and the only birds that were even marginal possibilities as photo subjects were the ducks, among whom there were none but the usual suspects. As the featured image demonstrates, today was another “scenic” photography day. This time of year things are pretty ragged out there, but if you look around interesting…

Environment:Start Time: 2:20 PM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Mostly sunny, few clouds, light breeze Yet another stellar day for walking along the Arkansas River. I was certainly not the only one who felt that way because there were many folks out walking the trail with me – many with their best four legged friends. I don’t know if this excess traffic was to blame for the serious lack of birds making themselves visible but I guess that is as good a reason as any. I did get another shot of an American Kestrel but I had a Kestrel in my…

Environment:Start Time: 2:10 PM Temperature: 44 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, intermittent breeze The temperature finally reached a level that I deemed “walkable” with only a mild breeze so I made it out of the house this afternoon for a good long walk. I came today carrying the appropriate equipment for getting some bird photos. Today’s featured image of an American Kestrel demonstrates that I made a good decision. I was also lucky enough to catch a Greater Yellowlegs poking around the Arkansas River – his portrait is posted below. The one thing that struck me as I walked was…

Environment:Start Time: 12:55 PM Temperature: 48 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, no breeze After one day of snow and a second one of very cold temps I finally got the courage to head back out to Lake Pueblo State Park. I was really surprised by the amount of snow I found when I arrived. There was practically none! The “deepest” snow was limited to the paved walkways. The unpaved trails were not muddy at all as I had expected them to be. What was worse – before I headed out I had decided to bring my wide angle zoom to…

Environment:Start Time: 1:45 PM Temperature: 45 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, mild breeze I had to make it out to Lake Pueblo State Park this afternoon because the weather folks on local TV are saying tomorrow starts and stays cold with a snowfall finale. Not that you could tell that by conditions out today – fantastic weather. Once again the birds were playing hard to get. Plenty of ducks (and a Pied-billed Grebe) to keep me occupied, though. Captures for today include the featured image of a Song Sparrow (above) and the aforementioned Grebe. I spotted a group of Bufflehead…

Environment:Start Time: 1:15 PM Temperature: 55 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, mild breeze Ideal conditions prevailed today at Lake Pueblo State Park. Wind was not an issue while the light was fantastic. Not many birds chose to pose in the good light for me, though. There were fewer fishermen in the river but far more people out walking their dogs and riding their bikes – two guys were even out there on horseback. I took a shot of a large group of Ducks in the Arkansas river – mostly Goldeneye and I think possibly some Bufflehead which is today’s featured…

Environment:Start Time: 12:35 PM Temperature: 50 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds, moderate wind What could have been another fine day for being outdoors was tarnished by a truly pesky wind. Even with my hat’s chin-strap in place I spent a good deal of time holding onto it. It was just as well – I didn’t need to use my camera – there was not much going on. I did snap one picture (above) of the fishermen staked out in the middle of the Arkansas River like a picket fence. Fishing was what today was all about. Hopefully tomorrow will be…

Environment:Start Time: 2:00 PM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunny, high clouds, light wind First outing in 2021. A basically ideal day if you ignored the wind. Apparently the smaller birds were not inclined to do so except for a group of Bushtits who were too busy to get their picture taken. Hawks were out really enjoying the wind but they used it mostly to circle high in the sky. I did get a couple of shots of a Red-tailed Hawk perched pretty far away and those shots are posted here. I’m pretty sure National Geographic isn’t going to be calling…
