Environment:Start Time: 2:10 PM Temperature: 39 degrees Sky: sunshine, moderate breeze A chilly day finally moderated sufficiently to allow me to hit the trail this afternoon at Lake Pueblo State Park. I was surprised at the number of other visitors who also managed to make it out as well. Snow is only present in the most shadowy areas and the trails are mostly mud free. As usual, I did not see any Eagles and the Owls are also staying out of sight. My Belted Kingfisher buddy was quite active and kept well out of range. As luck would have it…

Environment:Start Time: 9:50 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: sunshine, moderate wind I pushed myself to get out to the river as early as possible today so that I might be able to avoid the strong winds that the local weather lady was predicting for this afternoon. Well, I guess those winds hadn’t heard the forecast because they were firmly established by the time I arrived. It was too bad since the light was really nice and there was practically no one else in the park. Very few fishermen were in or around the river. Not many birds were venturing out…

Environment:Start Time: 2:40 PM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Mostly cloudy, spotty sunshine, light breeze Winter continues to frustrate my walking plans. I finally decided to hit the trail today because snow is predicted again for tonight. Conditions were not what I would call ideal but I’m sure it will be much worse tomorrow. The one high point was the absence of fellow walkers – only a few fishermen were braving the river. But there were some birds. A nice variety, actually. The ducks were limited to Common Goldeneye and a few Mallards. There were four or five American Coots, a…

Environment: Snowbound It’s been ten days since my last walk and it doesn’t look like I will be hitting the trail before next week. Old Man Winter seems to have been saving it for a big finish and has dumped cold and snow all over the place. So today’s featured image is a shot of a Cedar Waxwing from last August which I am posting as a glimmer of hope for better times to come. Stay warm, everyone. Environment:Start Time: 1:50 PM Temperature: 41 degrees Sky: Sunny, clear, light breeze After a long three day pause the weather finally seemed inviting enough to take a turn at Lake Pueblo State Park. Despite the (I hope) seasonal scarcity of birds I had a couple strokes of good luck capturing birds in flight. The luck can be largely credited to my choice of the Nikon D5100 for the camera du jour. That Belted Kingfisher (today’s featured image) that has been tormenting me of late finally made it onto my memory card as he took flight. A little later I spent…

Environment:Start Time: 1:10 PM Temperature: 42 degrees Sky: Sunny, clear, light breeze What was supposed to be cold snowy day turned out to be a spectacular day for a walk and some casual birding. Though the birds were not totally on board with this feeling I did manage to get a few shots in. I had a real good shot at a distant Cooper’s Hawk but came up with a fuzzy mess. I’m still trying to figure out getting good focus on distant subjects – gonna keep trying. The other disappointment of the day came at the wings of a…

Environment:Start Time: 2:10 PM Temperature: 63 degrees Sky: Sunny, clear, light breeze Another great afternoon for walking. Many people seemed to agree as there was a surprising number of folks out walking too. And biking. All the hub-bub did not seem to frighten off too many birds. Once again there was a nice variety to be seen. I was happy to catch sight of a couple of Flickers and there was a Great Blue Heron browsing the same side of the Arkansas River on which I was walking. This favor has been rewarded by earning him or her a spot…
