Environment:Start Time: 11:05 AM Temperature: 45 degrees Sky: Mix of Sun and clouds, light breeze The sunny weather that greeted me as I woke up this morning started to deteriorate as noon approached. So I adjusted my walking plans and decided to have a stroll by the river before lunch. My flexibility was greatly rewarded when I spotted what I first though was a Red-tailed Hawk perched high up on one of the (too many) power poles that march through Lake Pueblo State Park. I did not change my mind about the bird until I heard him/her speak out clearly….

Environment:Start Time: 3:30 PM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Mix of Sun and clouds, light breeze Another stretch of unpleasant weather has ended allowing me to get out to Lake Pueblo State Park to asses the situation. Things are looking good – trees are starting to bud and, even though it snowed yesterday, most of the snow had melted already and it was not as muddy on the trails as I thought it would be. Besides the budding trees another harbinger of Spring made it’s presence known – American Robins were out in force. One in particular (the three photos posted…

Environment:Start Time: 10:25 AM Temperature: 58 degrees Sky: Mix of Sun and clouds, light breeze Spring-like weather is persisting and will so for most of the week ahead. Local weather forecasters are promising us a snowy Saturday. Not at all unusual weather for March in Southeastern Colorado. Birds are still playing hard to get but activity is picking up. I could hear a number of unfamiliar bird calls and a couple of recognizable (by me) ones. There were Blue Jays about to be sure. I also heard a Belted Kingfisher. Aside from using my zoom lens to ID some of…

Environment:Start Time: 9:40 AM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sun, Sun, Sun, no clouds, light breeze After a brief one day Winter interlude faux Spring is back. I got going about as early as I have in 2021. Wildlife is still scarce but I was very surprised to see two Cabbage Butterflies flitting about – looking for the flowers that have not quite decided to sprout. For a featured image today is a not great shot of an American Kestrel who was perched high above the trail. I wonder if it is his fault that there are very few smaller birds…

Environment:Start Time: 2:05 PM Temperature: 63 degrees Sky: Sun, Sun, Sun, no clouds, light breeze The string of great days continues. Today I was joined by a lot more other folks – lots of whom were fishing. But a few more birds than yesterday also joined the party. The big prize is today’s featured image of a Great Horned Owl who was perched in a cottonwood tree close to the trail along the Arkansas River. I was very happy to see an owl – I was starting to worry about them. Also Dark-eyed Juncos made an appearance along with a…

Environment:Start Time: 12:05 PM Temperature: 65 degrees Sky: Sun, Sun, Sun, no clouds, light breeze Fantastic day! Even better than yesterday. Really amazing to think that one week ago we were freezing. Once again my bird friends were otherwise engaged. Seems like every time I go out I see less and less wildlife. It is kind of weird. There were no ducks at all on the Arkansas River and it has been a while since I saw a Sparrow or a Junco. I hope Spring brings a little more action. What I did get today was a Red-tailed Hawk in…

Environment:Start Time: 3:05 PM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunshine, light breeze Two days in a row! Things are starting to look up weather-wise. Not so much bird-wise. I had a good long walk but really only saw any birds along the Arkansas River and even there pickings were slim. My one photographic “triumph” is today’s featured image – a male Bufflehead. Really not the best photo I’ve ever taken but I did manage to get him into the light at such an angle as to highlight his iridescent colors in the head and neck areas that often appear to be…
