Environment:Start Time: 3:30 PM Temperature: 39 degrees Sky: Sunny with thin clouds and merciless breeze. Well, today’s post is gonna be a quick one. I got going in pretty good light but my enthusiasm for the light was quickly squashed by the wickedest breeze that I’ve ever tried to work in. So I was delighted to get today’s featured (and only) image pretty early on which allowed me to cut the walk short. The look on the face of this Great Horned Owl tells me that s/he was not too thrilled with the climate either. Hope the hunting is good…

Environment:Start Time: 3:50 PM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunny with thin clouds. Another break in the gloomy weather provided the opportunity to go for a walk along the river. Even at 53 degrees it was a little chilly out which would have been easier to handle if I’d had something to do like maybe take some pictures of birds. Not much happening on that front. I did catch another shot of a Northern Shrike (featured) who seemed to be actively hunting though I have no idea what. My other capture (below) is a Belted Kingfisher who was working the Arkansas…

January 07, 2023

Environment:Start Time: 3:30 PM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny. Eagles are remaining elusive but I’m still having luck with owls. Today’s featured image is a Great Horned Owl who, I believe, was just waking up and running over the day’s to-do list before heading out. Besides this organized owl there wasn’t much else to shoot. Pictured below is a White-crowned Sparrow that I caught checking out the Arkansas River in the late afternoon sunshine. Tomorrow’s weather is predicted to be even better than today’s – wish I could get a bird forecast, too. Sightings:Birds: Gadwalls, Gulls, Goldeneye, Buffleheads, Canada Geese,…

January 05, 2023

Environment:Start Time: 3:40 PM Temperature: 43 degrees Sky: Sunny to start. My first 2023 outing is now in the books. I finally got a day that wasn’t too cold, dark or windy. Thing is, it wasn’t too birdy. I still got some good sightings but not many photo opportunities. The best moment came when I accidentally flushed a Great Horned Owl from its perch and it flew past me. I was surprised when it took flight since I had not seen it at all. S/He flew right past me at eye level no more that 15 feet away and I…
