The weather outside is frightful. My warm wool blanket is delightful. I guess I got nowhere to go. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Things were a lot nicer in 2022. Environment:Start Time: 10:25 AM Temperature: 43 degrees Sky: Sunshine with chilly breeze A dicey weather forecast for this afternoon and some pretty decent morning temps brought me out for a morning stroll at Lake Pueblo State Park. One of the better decisions I’ve made in my life. Right from the get-go it was literally eagle, eagle, eagle! I stepped out of my car and saw two…

Yes, I am getting a little fussy in my old age. Today’s conditions were perfect except for the low temperature. So let’s revisit 2022 and enjoy the eagle that put on quite a show. Think Spring! Environment:Start Time: 2:35 PM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunshine light breeze My new friend, the Bald Eagle, was perched off the trail in about the same spot as yesterday. I decided to chance a little mud on my shoes and tromped out for a better shot. Fortunately this bird is not the skittish type and patiently waited for me to find a nice clear…

Environment:Start Time: 7:50 AM Temperature: 28 degrees Sky: All sunshine. Really rather chilly out on the trail this morning. Even so, it was worth the trip out. The featured image for today is one reason – an American Bald Eagle who didn’t let me get too close. Normally the eagle would be the big thrill of the day but not today! Pictured here is a Great Horned Owl, most likely female, sitting in the same nest that she used last year. She and her hubby have been hanging around the area for a while so I thought I’d have a…

Environment:Start Time: 7:30 AM Temperature: 36 degrees Sky: All sunshine. What could have been a carbon copy of yesterday’s stellar walking conditions was blown away (literally) by an ever increasing breeze that made walking pretty uncomfortable. There was a pretty good variety of waterfowl out on the Arkansas River (see Pied-billed Grebe photo below) and two or three Great Blue Herons working hard at avoiding me. Featured is a young Mule Deer Buck who just could not take his eyes off of me. I was likewise fixated on his nice starter rack. Pictured here is a male Belted Kingfisher who…

Environment:Start Time: 8:35 AM Temperature: 42 degrees Sky: Mostly sunshine. Activity remains low (bird wise) out at Lake Pueblo State Park. There were quite a few human fishermen along and in the Arkansas River which may be why the birds were elsewhere. You can tell things were slow by my posting a European Starling here. Not the most exotic or rare bird out there. Featured are a couple of American Coots who were taking it easy on a midriver rock. There are a lot of Coots on the water this Winter. Also avoiding the river is the Great Blue Heron…

Environment:Start Time: 4:30 PM Temperature: 66 degrees Sky: Mostly sunshine. Today’s outing was brief with my only intention to see if walking conditions were improving in the warmer weather over the last couple of days. Things are better but there is still ice and plenty of mud around. I was not dressed for the conditions so I just mosied around the Osprey Picnic Area to see what was what. I did take a quick detour to the Arkansas River where I caught the female Belted Kingfisher that is today’s featured image. This is a preferred spot for this little lady…

Environment:Start Time: 3:20 PM Temperature: 55 degrees Sky: Sunshine. I took a chance and went back out to Rock Canyon one day after a pretty good snow storm a day before. The temperatures had risen nicely throughout the day so I figured the trails would be passable. This turned out to be true for the paved trails but everywhere else the conditions could only be called Swampy! There was standing water or mud an inch or two deep. It was a tough slog. So I didn’t stay long. I did manage to see the Eastern Bluebird who got the featured…

Yet another snow day today. Last year was a lot better – in many different ways. Here is another walk down Memory Lane. Environment:Start Time: 7:20 AM Temperature: 29 degrees Sky: Sunshine.
