Environment:Start Time: 3:30 PM Temperature: 50 degrees Sky: Sunshine. Super nice day out on the trail if you could ignore the mud. The Arkansas River is starting to get busy with a pretty nice variety of ducks splashing about like the Red-breasted Merganser pictured here. I did see several Great Blue Herons but only in the distance and none in the water. I spotted another Cooper’s Hawk but, unfortunately, it also spotted me. The big prize of the day is my featured image – a passing Northern Harrier. It popped up out of nowhere and flew by quickly. Even so,…

Environment:Start Time: 8:00 AM Temperature: 38 degrees Sky: Mostly sunshine with a wicked breeze. Despite the moderate temperature of 38 degrees (F) conditions out on the trail were mostly miserable. I was out for less than an hour. Featured is a couple of American Coots who were freshening up in the Arkansas River. I was hoping the wind would entice the Hawks and/or Eagles to come out and ride the air currents rising off of the canyon walls. No such luck. The only birds taking advantage of the moving air were the Gulls. After all, Gulls just want to have…

Weather and trail conditions continue to keep me at home and things are not looking better for the coming weekend. So let’s reminisce about the good old days of 2022. Environment:Start Time: 3:15 PM Temperature: 35 degrees Sky: All sunshine. The morning temperatures are making afternoon trips my favorite choice, even though the warmer temperature was just 35 degrees. I still consider today’s trip a big success due to the appearance of two American Bald Eagles. One of them kept its distance but the one I got close to (featured above) looks to be a nearly mature bird with a lot on its mind. Neither bird stuck around for long but it was great seeing them. My only other captures are the female Downy Woodpecker pictured here and the Ring-billed…

Temperamental weather conditions persist. Here is what was happening two years ago. Think Spring. Environment:Start Time: 2:10 PM Temperature: 42 degrees Sky: Sunshine little breeze Today started out a little dicey weather-wise but turned into an extremely pleasant afternoon which transported me from my couch to the Rock Canyon trails at Lake Pueblo State Park. The Arkansas River was well populated with fishermen which generally is a good thing – everyone should be out enjoying such a day – but is kind of a bummer for me because all that river traffic cuts down on my chances of seeing Belted…

One man’s Winter Wonderland is another’s Hellscape. A frigid and snowy morning kept me home today. Last year was much nicer so let’s journey back in time and enjoy that day once more. Environment:Start Time: 3:30 PM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny. Eagles are remaining elusive but I’m still having luck with owls. Today’s featured image is a Great Horned Owl who, I believe, was just waking up and running over the day’s to-do list before heading out. Besides this organized owl there wasn’t much else to shoot. Pictured below is a White-crowned Sparrow that I caught checking out the…
