Hot again this morning. Got going at 6:05 with temp in the mid 60s. No clouds and a breeze that was trying hard to graduate to full on wind.

With the temperature being what it was I had decided to take an abbreviated walk by only taking Whisper on his shorter tour and then calling it a day. We looped past a short stretch of the Arkansas River (gorgeous in the rising sun) and then I circled back to have a look at the heron nest. There were four birds present and there seemed to be a little restlessness within the congregation. As we headed back to the car it occurred to me that I did have my Panasonic GX-85 in the car and a tripod that I had not taken back into the house after last night’s sunset shoot. What the heck, I thought, I’ll park Whisper in the car and give a little video a try. Man! Did I luck out! I don’t pretend to understand Heron family relations but just as I started recording an amazing ruckus erupted in the nest. I caught a lot of it and you can watch the video below. It is really worth a look.

Sightings:
Birds:
Osprey, Red-Tail Hawk, Starlings, Robins, Canada Geese, Mississippi Kite, Great Blue Herons, Mourning Doves
Critters: Mule Deer

Gear: Nikon D5100, 55-200mm, Lumix GX-85, 100-300mm

Do to quirk in my blogging platform the video is not accessible from the Hidden Southern Colorado homepage. You can view the video here.

A family of Great Blue Herons in their nest. For no reason known to me a wild kerfuffle occurs that is fascinating to watch. Shot at Lake Pueblo State Park, Colorado July 9, 2020. Original is 4K shot on Panasonic GX-85 with 100/300mm Zoom.
