While looking through my picture archive on the 31st I came across an image that I shot in 2015 on October 31st. It struck me not just because it is a wonderfully colorful Autumn scenic but also because I was able to recognize exactly where I took the shot. The image is the featured image (above) for this post. It shows the wooded area between the Osprey Picnic Area and the Arkansas River. So I decided to dust off my Canon Powershot G12 – the camera I used to take this image in 2015 – and see if I could shoot the same scene to compare the changes in the area between then and now. The image below was shot October 31, 2020. The location is the same (I know this by checking the tree tag on the tree to the left of the frame) even though the framing and perspective are not precisely matched. The change is striking. This is the main area of Lake Pueblo State Park that was damaged by the June 2018 Stonemoor wildfire. It’s a big reminder of what can be lost if we are not careful in the current drought conditions.
