Hawk at Lake Pueblo State Park, Colorado

One last day of Summer highlighted by an Autumn like temperature. I think we are in a transition period in terms of birds as well. The Summer birds are thinning out and (hopefully) the Winter birds will start finding their way into the park. There is still a little action to be found, though. I got a pretty good shot of what is probably a Sharp-shinned Hawk perching on a low tree branch. He had arrived there after making what can only be described as a bizarre dive to the ground in a failed attempt at snagging a meal. Really at first I thought he was falling which is why I missed a shot of the “dive.” But he seemed OK afterwards – probably disappointed with his performance. He didn’t sit there for long because he flew off allowing me to get a strange shot of his rear end as he left. Well, if you can’t get a great shot go for a weird one. Today’s featured image is Double Crested Cormorant adjusting his perch position with some fanfare. Below is a long shot (and a terrible one) of what is probably the biggest Great Horned Owl I have ever seen – most likely a female. I tried to get closer but she wasn’t willing to wait for me.
