Sunshine abounded this morning out on the trail. The same could not be said for bird activity, I’m afraid. But there were a couple of nice surprises. Things are picking up on the Arkansas River with sightings of a Pied-billed Grebe (who refused to get into focus – so no pics) and a number of Blue-winged Teal. Very nice to see the Winter birds coming in. I also got a shot of a Cedar Waxwing that was busy darting out from its perch and snagging bugs out of midair. Not the best Waxwing picture ever taken but you can see the little red patch of wax from whence its name arises. The featured image is a Double Crested Cormorant (mostly in focus) with its blue eye lit up by the Sun. Below is a couple of the many shots I got of a Great Blue Heron getting down to business on the Arkansas River.
