It really was a beautiful morning out on the trail at Lake Pueblo State Park. The only mitigating factor was a bit of a cold breeze that not only bothered me but also was ruffling the feathers of today’s featured subject – a Great Blue Heron. That heron was the biggest bird I saw today but the other birds were quite a bit busier than the wind-blown heron. The Yellow-rumped Warbler pictured here is one of several I saw giving the bare trees a detailed inspection. The lady kingfisher (below) was actively working the river and I saw her complete one dive though I couldn’t tell whether or not it was successful. The most excitement was between two Mallard drakes (bottom) who were involved in the duck version of fisticuffs. There’s no telling what the problem was but I’ll wager a hen was involved. The duck that is on top in the photo is the one who appears to have won as the one on the bottom made a hasty exit right after receiving the “punch” pictured. I guess he forgot to duck.
