December opened up this year with two days of frigid temps and some wicked wind. Things have settled down (and warmed up) so I did manage to get out to Lake Pueblo State Park this afternoon. I must say that it was worth the wait – perfect conditions. The icing on the cake came in the form of some pretty decent bird sightings. Very early in the walk I came upon a Great Blue Heron perched in tree near the Anticline Fishing Pond – a very popular spot. I switched on the camera burst mode just in time to catch the great bird lifting off the branch into the air – today’s featured image. A short time later I spotted an American Kestrel perched (as usual) high up in tree. The shots I tried at this location did not really work out and the bird flew off while I was changing position. So I went around the corner and spotted him again – only this time perched on a low branch of a Cottonwood. I think this is the lowest perch I have ever seen a Kestrel select. I got a number of really good shots – one of which is posted below.
