American Kestrel at Lake Pueblo State Park, Colorado

My plan was to hit the trail early today to get some shots of the Bald Eagles that are wintering in the park. I have been running into other park regulars who are always telling me about all the eagles they are seeing in the early hours. Well, no eagles were anywhere to be seen this morning. One reason for that is probably that the fishing pond is completely frozen over so any kind of fishing (pole or talon) is pretty much out of the question. But I did encounter a very accommodating American Kestrel – pictured here on his solitary perch and as today’s featured image up top. I’m pretty sure this is a male and I think he was hunting but it seemed in a halfhearted way. The Arkansas River had plenty of ducks, grebes and coots sampling its goods.
