Environment:Start Time: 7:05 AM Temperature: 58 degrees Sky: Mix of Sun and clouds. Yesterday’s Cooper’s Hawk stars were nowhere to be found this morning. Never fear, a Great Blue Heron (or maybe two) stepped in to grab the morning light and my attention. Today’s featured image and the one at the bottom of this post are the same bird but I’m not positive about the identity of the one in the middle – I wish they wore name tags. I know I am accusing the Heron in the photo below of dancing in the caption but really it was struggling…

July 22, 2022

Environment:Start Time: 6:05 AM Temperature: 64 degrees Sky: Sunny. More great walking conditions. Less birding opportunities. Today’s featured image is, I guess, a Deering opportunity with me finally getting a clear shot of a Mule Deer doe and her twins out shopping the prairie. The Cooper’s Hawk Kids were spending the morning chasing each other from tree to tree (their flight skills are quite good now) allowing me only one unobstructed shot of a stationary bird. To wrap it all up a Northern Flicker landed in some very flattering light and began posing for me. Sightings:Birds: Mallards, Osprey, Starlings, Western…

Environment:Start Time: 6:05 AM Temperature: 60 degrees Sky: Sunny. Even with a little cooler climate things were pretty quiet out on the trail this morning. Pictured below is another shot of Canada Geese decorating the Arkansas River. It’s not that I like photographing geese so much as they are practically the only birds on the river. One Osprey made a strike way upriver from my position but fortunately it wanted to eat somewhere else and flew downriver right over me with its prize – today’s featured image. The bottom mini-gallery is a couple of subjects who made it tough to…

Environment:Start Time: 6:20 AM Temperature: 68 degrees Sky: Sunny with a welcome breeze. The stars of this morning’s walk were the juvenile Cooper’s Hawks that I have been stalking for the past couple of months. I saw three of the youngsters and am posting pictures of two of them. The featured image is of one of them working on devouring what looks like a smaller bird. I don’t know if this catch was his or if an adult had provided it but he knew what to do with it. The same bird is pictured below getting settled in for a…
