Environment:Start Time: 4:30 PM Temperature: 66 degrees Sky: Mostly sunshine. Today’s outing was brief with my only intention to see if walking conditions were improving in the warmer weather over the last couple of days. Things are better but there is still ice and plenty of mud around. I was not dressed for the conditions so I just mosied around the Osprey Picnic Area to see what was what. Environment:Start Time: 3:20 PM Temperature: 55 degrees Sky: Sunshine. I took a chance and went back out to Rock Canyon one day after a pretty good snow storm a day before. The temperatures had risen nicely throughout the day so I figured the trails would be passable. This turned out to be true for the paved trails but everywhere else the conditions could only be called Swampy! There was standing water or mud an inch or two deep. It was a tough slog. Environment:Start Time: 3:30 PM Temperature: 50 degrees Sky: Sunshine. Super nice day out on the trail if you could ignore the mud. The Arkansas River is starting to get busy with a pretty nice variety of ducks splashing about like the Red-breasted Merganser pictured here. I did see several Great Blue Herons but only in the distance and none in the water. I spotted another Cooper’s Hawk but, unfortunately, it also spotted me. Environment:Start Time: 8:00 AM Temperature: 38 degrees Sky: Mostly sunshine with a wicked breeze. Despite the moderate temperature of 38 degrees (F) conditions out on the trail were mostly miserable. I was out for less than an hour. Featured is a couple of American Coots who were freshening up in the Arkansas River. I was hoping the wind would entice the Hawks and/or Eagles to come out and ride the air currents rising off of the canyon walls. No such luck. Environment:Start Time: 3:15 PM Temperature: 35 degrees Sky: All sunshine. The morning temperatures are making afternoon trips my favorite choice, even though the warmer temperature was just 35 degrees. I still consider today’s trip a big success due to the appearance of two American Bald Eagles. One of them kept its distance but the one I got close to (featured above) looks to be a nearly mature bird with a lot on its mind. Neither bird stuck around for long but it was great seeing them.
