Environment:Start Time: 9:00 AM Temperature: 45 degrees Sky: Sunny, light to moderate wind A little cooler this morning with a very stiff breeze making things a little uncomfortable. Not many birds out and those I saw were having difficulty getting around in the wind. I, too, cut my outing a little short to get out of the wind. But I did notice that Spring is really trying to set in. Things are finally starting to bloom as demonstrated by today’s featured image of a Cabbage Butterfly on some blooming Mexican Plum (ID courtesy of Google Lens.) Pictured below is some…

Environment:Start Time: 8:40 AM Temperature: 45 degrees Sky: Sunny, light breeze A very pleasant morning greeted me upon arrival at Lake Pueblo State Park. Still a lot of nesting activity going on – especially the Starlings and the Osprey. It looks like a pair of Osprey are going to take up residence in last year’s new nest right next to the Swim Beach. I’ve seen activity there two days in a row now. I also saw a couple of Osprey checking out the nest that is built on top of a utility pole nearer to the Arkansas River right along…

Environment:Start Time: 8:35 AM Temperature: 44 degrees Sky: Sunny, clouds; annoying breeze Things a little cooler this morning which wouldn’t have been so bad if the punishing breeze had been missing. This was the kind of breeze that would feel great on a September afternoon but is not welcome on an April morning. It turned out that putting up with the cooler weather paid off. I spotted a Red-tailed Hawk perched in the Osprey Picnic area and headed over to grab some pics (one is posted below.) What happened next was really something. An Osprey swooped in and started after…

Environment:Start Time: 7:45 AM Temperature: 47 degrees Sky: Sunny few clouds; light breeze Warmer mornings are starting to become the rule getting me out on the trail earlier and earlier. I like these early starts as it usually gives me a chance to spot Wild Turkeys before they hunker down for the day. I’m still waiting on Orioles, Tanagers, Kingbirds and Swallows but I don’t think that will be long. The birds that are around were keeping their distance today leaving me with one shot of a Common Grackle and a couple of Mergansers. Today’s featured image is a landscape…

Environment:Start Time: 8:15 AM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunny with clouds; light breeze Out early again trying to photograph that early bird getting the worm. Also I was trying to beat the predicted cloudy/windy conditions expected later today. Plenty of birds out doing bird stuff. It looks like the Starlings are getting set up for the season – lots of movement in and out of nests. Today’s featured image is a pair of Wood Ducks in the Arkansas River. Pictured below is an Osprey scoping out the Anticline Fishing Pond. The real prize photo of the day is posted here…

Environment:Start Time: 8:15 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunny with few clouds; heavy breeze Made an early start once again this morning. Weather predictions are for record April heat today and gusty winds. The most interesting bird activity happened right at the start of my walk. There was a Red-tailed Hawk perched up on one of the (too) many power lines that cut across the park. This is not anything unusual except that today an American Kestrel was buzzing and thumping the hawk relentlessly. All of this was taking place at a good distance so the picture I got is…

Environment:Start Time: 9:00 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunny with few clouds; light breeze Weather predictions of a warm day ahead got me motivated and out the door earlier than usual. Of course, as things start to really heat up I’ll be hitting the trail even earlier than today. I was certainly not the first visitor of the day but attendance was still light. My walk was pretty unremarkable in terms of photography though I managed to capture a “new” bird – a Rufous-sided Towhee – today’s featured image. I almost didn’t even bother shooting him because he was bouncing…

Environment:Start Time: 6:15 PM Temperature: 58 degrees Sky: Sunny with few clouds; light breeze Since Last evening’s outing was so successful I decided to try it again. I did see a good number of birds but none were anywhere near enough to get a useful image. I thought I had spotted a Starling nest last evening but I was not able to relocate it. The Heron nest that was so entertaining last night was completely abandoned. So I was disappointed as I neared the end of my normal route and decided to turn off my camera and just enjoy the…

Environment:Start Time: 6:15 PM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunny with few clouds; heavy breeze Certain life obligations kept me home until early evening but I must say it was worth the wait! Really very few other humans on the trails or in the river and the birds were boppin’ about. As you can see I got another Great Horned Owl who was really nestled back into the trees. I had to go way off trail to get a clear shot and am very grateful to my subject for putting up with my stomping about. But the stars of the outing…

Environment:Start Time: 8:50 AM Temperature: 55 degrees Sky: Sunny with few clouds; moderate breeze Much calmer at Lake Pueblo State Park this morning if you didn’t count the breeze. I got going as early as I could to avoid the afternoon wind that had been predicted. It was also expected to get pretty warm as well, though snow is predicted for tomorrow morning. You know, Spring. The Starlings were, by far, the most active birds. I tried to spot a nest but was unsuccessful – I am keeping an eye on the one I found last year but so far…
