Pushing the Limits of the GX-85

As I have stated before in this blog, I am not your normal nature photographer. When it comes to bird photography this is especially true. I don’t stake out areas or otherwise stalk birds to get my shots. Rather, I walk a set route as close to daily as circumstances allow and shoot what comes my way. Nor do I lug around a mammoth 500mm lens capable of seeing a given bird’s teeth. Since I am usually also walking my dog, thus giving me only one hand with which to shoot, I have to travel light. This need for portability…

Got the earliest start of 2020 this morning arriving at the park right at 7 with another 45 degree temperature. Quite a cloudy day with very spotty sun. Weather predictions for the day are calling for record heat in the 90+ range but with these clouds I have my doubts. I only got four pictures this morning (an Osprey, two shots of a Cormorant and one shot of my favorite Barn Swallow couple) but since I was using the Lumix’s digital telephoto extension feature the results were not usable at all. I was shooting in Aperture Priority mode with ISO…

The warm weather continues allowing me to arrive at the park at 7:25 this morning with a cooler than yesterday 45 degree temperature. Plenty of sun, no wind and few clouds in the sky for decoration. A lot of activity today from what I refer to as Flitty Birds. Those are the ones in constant motion that defy identification. I only got one frame of an American Kestrel and it is no prize winner. Those guys are always perched so high up in the trees and they are so small that it is nearly impossible to get a decent shot…

A particularly warm night allowed us to set out at 7:45 with a 54 degree temperature. Plenty of sun and a few clouds in the sky for decoration. There was a great deal of bird chatter this morning but no really sensational or unusual sightings. Photographically not a banner day. I did get a long shot of an Osprey perching in the distance with his rather large catch. The distance made for disappointing results as you can see in the photo below. I also got over to the site of the Heron nests and found one of them to be…

Started out at 7:45 this AM in 50+ degree heat. Very calm and if there was a cloud in the sky I did not see it. What was in the sky was thousands of annoying insects who were for some reason being ignored by the Swallows. Flowers are starting to make an appearance along with the bugs – I guess they both need each other. Pictured above is some variety or other of Milkvetch. The “excitement” today came in the addition of a new bird to my collection of sightings. The little guy shown below is, I believe, a Yellow-rumped…

As the days grow longer and warmer I will be arriving at the park earlier and earlier on the days that I do go. Today we made it there by 8 with 47 degree temperature. Another pretty routine walk ensued. There are two highlights worthy of note. First I got my first 2020 sighting of a Nuthatch and probably the best photo of such a bird I have ever made. Also today marks the return of a pair of Barn Swallows to their (ancestral?) home under the eves of an informational display at the Anticline Fishing Pond at the park….

I was just too antsy this morning to not go for a walk. Whisper and I made it to Lake Pueblo State Park right around 9:30. It was pretty busy even for a Saturday. Not really a photography paradise this morning. I think the birds must be taking the weekend off. The most exciting thing I saw was some type of Tern circling over the Anticline Fish Pond making occasional abortive dives at the water. I got a pretty lame shot of him. Sightings:Birds: Osprey, Starlings, Kestrel, Cormorant, Mallard Ducks, Western Meadow Lark, Turkey Vulture, Violet Green Swallows (probably), Canada…

Once again I tried my luck on an evening hike. Unfortunately I did not get the spectacular sky that I did two nights ago. Still it was a pleasant enough evening with a few solid sightings. once we had done our normal tour I drove us over to the Osprey Picnic Area to check in on the Heron’s nest that I have discovered over there. The nest seemed to be occupied so I tried sneaking up for a closer shot. On doing so I spooked three other Herons from a neighboring tree that I had not seen at all (the…

This image showcases one of the coolest features of the Panasonic Lumix GX-85. This panorama shot was created in-camera as the photo was being taken. The lens used was the Lumix G Vario 45-150mm Quite a change of pace today. The promise of stormy weather made me wait until evening to head out to Lake Pueblo State Park. This turned out to have been a good decision. Instead of going to the usual walking location I took up a position on the North side of the Lake Pueblo Dam and pointed my camera West at the Wet Mountains which were…
