Another early start had us on the trail this morning with mostly sunny skies and a little toasty 65 degree temperature. Summer is starting to rear its ugly head. As the temps continue to rise each morning I will be forced to start rolling out of bed even earlier. One advantage with arriving early is the chance to get some great prairie landscape sunrise shots like today’s featured image. Three notable events emerged from today’s outing. Probably the most exciting was spotting a young Great Horned Owl perched in a tree just checking things out. I think this is only…

6:10 found us on the trail this morning with clear skies and a pleasant 55 degree temperature. The Anticline Fishing Pond was bare of any Osprey fisherman upon our arrival. Could be they are having better luck elsewhere or maybe they have completely emptied the pond of fish. I did manage to get some photos today though none will be award winners as all had subjects who kept their distance forcing me to heavily crop the images. One is especially exciting for me because it is of a bird I have not seen before in person. This newcomer is a…

Got a much earlier start this morning thanks to clear skies and warm 53 degree temperature. Got started right at 6:15. Just like yesterday there was only a single Osprey working the fishing pond this morning. He was not putting on the same type of show as in previous mornings. Today he was perched high in a tree possibly digesting the days catch. Other than that it was a pretty uneventful walk. Both the Heron nest and Starling nest that I have been keeping tabs on showed no signs of activity. I think the baby Starlings may have already fledged…

Started walking today right around 7 AM under a mostly cloudy sky with temp in the low 50s. Only a single Osprey was working the fishing pond this morning. I watched him for a while just before we started out but all he did was circle – I did not get to see any fishing attempts. The other birds at the park were chirping up a storm but staying mostly out of camera range. I did encounter a cooperative Flicker who has provided us with today’s featured picture. Sightings:Birds: Starlings, Swallows, Barn Swallow, Mallard Ducks, Wood Ducks, Osprey, Cormorant, Canada…

Not a lot of Osprey activity at the fishing pond when we arrived but there were two working the pond when we circled around on the end of our walk. Got to see one bird score with a pretty large fish while the other one just floated overhead. Both birds seem to know how far to distance themselves from me to prevent my

A cool start to the morning delayed our walk today but we were on the trail by 7:10. No breeze at all with basically clear, sunny skies but temps in the low to mid forties. I think the coolness of the morning was causing the birds to conserve their energy since very few were out and about and those that were felt no need to be photographed. There was no dazzling fishing exhibition being conducted by the Osprey, in fact, I saw no Osprey at all. The deer were much more active today but also rather camera shy. Since it…

Arrived at a little after 6 this morning as the sun was trying to gain a foothold through some pesky clouds. Temperature in the mid-50 range with no breeze. Once again our arrival was greeted with more aerial fishing acrobatics by a number of Osprey over the fishing pond. In fact just as I drove up one of the birds rose off the water with a good sized fish in hand and flew right over me. I guess he knew there was no chance of me taking a picture at that point. One other interesting sighting today was of a…

Got to the river around 6:15 this morning as the sun was rising. Temperature of 52 with a slight breeze. Upon arrival we were greeted with an amazing aerial show consisting of four Osprey actively fishing the Anticline Fishing Pond. They were swooping and diving and trying to steal each other’s catch. Sadly all of the best action was well out of reach for my 200mm lens but it was a real treat to watch. The other two highlights for today’s walk was seeing a beaver swimming on the far bank of the Arkansas River and I got another (better)…

Earliest start of the year at 6:10 AM with the temperature already at 55. Weather forecast is for wind today so I decided to try to beat it to the river. Things were active bird-wise but not people-wise which is just the way we like it. There was a little more action at the Starling nest. Today the adults were quite busy bringing in food for, not one, but two little Starlings whose heads were well out of the nest. The photo I got was not great but I have included it in the gallery below. Sightings:Birds: Starlings, Robins, Swallows,…
