July 08, 2020 Part 2

After taking a look out of my kitchen window around 7:45 PM and seeing a sky with tremendous potential to deliver some dramatic scenic vistas, I grabbed my camera (and Whisper) and we made a beeline for Lake Pueblo State Park. I have to admit that I did not get the picture that I had in mind, though I might have if I’d set up shop on the South end of the dam instead of the North end, I think I still got some great shots. Featured image above and all those below were captured with the Nikon. All in…

It’s going to be a hot one today. Weather forecast is for 100+ degrees. We got to our starting spot at 6:10 again and the temp had only reached 56 degrees. No clouds were there to offer even the slightest relief. You gotta start early or forget about it. I decided to give the heron’s a day off today and didn’t check out the nest this morning. I’m sure they are getting tired of me. Bird activity was quite low in the area of the park where I did walk. Today’s winner for most available bird would have to be…

More clouds reported for duty this morning bringing with them a 59 degree temperature. If there was a breeze it was not very noticeable. Since those recently mentioned clouds were mainly in the west the sun had no problem lighting our way as we headed out at 6:15. Since I have been splitting my daily walk into two parts, one with dog and one without, I have started taking both the Nikon D5100 with the 55/200mm zoom for chapter one of the outing and then switching to the Panasonic GX-85 fitted with the 100/300mm zoom for chapter two. With my…

No clouds this morning. None. Not even any of those little whispy ones you sometimes see near the mountain tops. We started out in 57 degree temp in a very light breeze. Even this low temp at 6:40 in the morning became less and less comfortable as the sun rose ever higher throughout our walk. The later start on our walk was because of a distraction that arose as we were driving out to the park. That distraction was an amazing full moon that was close to setting over the Wet Mountains. Instead of going straight to our walking grounds…

We started on our walk today around 6:10 in 57 degrees and the sun behind a low cloud bank in the East. No other clouds were poised to offer any further resistance to the sun with only a small amount of haze and a very light breeze. As I expected the sun cleared the clouds just as we arrived on the river bank. The park was oddly unpopulated this morning I assume because everyone was up late last night celebrating the Fourth of July. Hungry, Hungry Herons I, again, made sure to pass by the heron nest to see if…

Sunny, sunny, sunny. Another 60 degree morning with little wind, scattered clouds and more wildfire related haze. An excellent day for a walk in the woods. The Ones That Got Away Today’s birding was eventful and productive. At first things were not looking good. I managed to miss shots of in-flight Belted Kingfisher, Cormorants and a Great Blue Heron – one after the other. I have been wondering where all the Kingfishers were hiding when I spotted one abandoning his perch next to the river and heading downstream right past my position. I got him in the viewfinder but the…

We set out at 6:30 this morning – not really sure why we got the late start but it must have been Whisper’s fault. The sky was hazy once again but there was little to no cloud cover. I think the haze is still smoke from nearby wildfires. No wind today to clear it out. Temperature was a comfortable 60 degrees. Since the sky was so clear I abandoned any hope of a decent landscape and went out this morning with the Nikon D5100 in hopes of getting some birds or critters. Frankly, there was not much going on at…

What a difference a day makes! Cloudless sky, no wind, and a temperature 18 degrees cooler than yesterday. I never realized 55 could seem so cool. I had no excuse to settle for a shorter hike as we set out on the trail at 6:20. Once again I was armed with my Panasonic GX-85 and the Olympus 14-54mm lens. The problem I faced today was that cloud free sky. Landscape shots with nothing but blue in the sky are usually pretty boring. I know that in this digital age of photography I could add in some interesting clouds if necessary…
