Environment:Start Time: 8:15 AM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunny, Intermittent Breeze Got a little earlier start this morning thanks to an absolutely cloudless sky which allowed the sunlight to shine unhindered. My walk was pretty much a carbon copy of yesterday’s except no Osprey bothered to show up. Speaking of not showing up, something I’ve noticed this year is an incredible lack of butterflies in the park. I’ve only seen a few all season. To make up for it I reached back to September 29, 2019 for today’s featured image of a Viceroy butterfly and a Cabbage butterfly on some…

Environment:Start Time: 8:40 AM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunny, Intermittent Breeze American Robins Rule Today’s outing turned out to be full of surprises. The first thing I noticed during the first portion of my walk was an incredible number of Robins flitting about. They were everywhere – I think they outnumbered the Starlings. Then, while puzzling over the Robins, I noticed that Juncos have arrived back at Lake Pueblo State Park for their Winter stay. I did not get a shot of one but I have time. Finally I discovered that I will have to eat my words from my…

Environment:Start Time: 7:45 AM Temperature: 63 degrees Sky: Sunny, Intermittent moderate Breeze The walking today was, as usual, excellent. Birding (not so much bird photography) was much better, too. I walked the same route as I did yesterday in hopes of getting a better shot of a Mountain Plover but there were none to be seen. A Belted Kingfisher teased me and flew downriver before I even registered what he was. The Killdeer were also content to remain on the far side of the Arkansas River. I did get a good crack at a Flicker who seemed quite content basking…

Environment:Start Time: 8:20 AM Temperature: 60+ degrees Sky: Sunny, Intermittent Breeze Today’s walk was great as usual as far as walking goes. The birds were not as happy to be out today and spent most of their time bouncing in and out of sight – somehow knowing exactly the right (wrong) time to switch position. I was pretty bummed out when I got home with only one frame of a Killdeer perched on a rock in the Arkansas River. In fact I had pretty much decided to just write the day off and not even bother blogging about it. But…

Environment:Start Time: 8:10 AM Temperature: 62 degrees Sky: Sunny, Light Wildfire Haze, Intermittent Breeze Another excellent morning to be out in nature. The wildfire haze was still present but to a much lesser extent. I was actually able to make out Pikes Peak from Reservoir Road as I entered Lake Pueblo State Park. There was a good amount of bird activity as well – I might even say too much as very few were inclined to pause for me to photograph. Nevertheless I did not come home empty-handed. Today’s featured image (above) is of a Wood Duck and a couple…

Environment:Start Time: 8:25 AM Temperature: 57 degrees Sky: Intermittent Sun, Wildfire Haze, No Breeze Today’s outing started on a odd and somber note. I lost my little walking buddy, Whisper, on the morning of the 19th. So I am now walking alone and it feels strange. My mood was lifted some by the great weather but it took me a while to get back to Casual Birding mode. As can be seen in the photo gallery below I had a pretty good day, considering. Today’s featured image is of some Virginia Creeper foliage that has started changing to its Autumn…

Environment:Start Time: 8:15 AM Temperature: 56 degrees Sky: Sunny, Wildfire Haze, Light Breeze What would have been another fabulous walking day was marred by a very noticeable helping of wildfire haze. Happily there was no odor that I could perceive but the light was rather muted. Despite the conditions I did manage to get a couple of bird shots (below) and also a Summer scenic of the Arkansas River (Above.) If you happened to have read my last post you will remember that I had lamented the fact that I had yet to get a decent shot of a Belted…

Environment:Start Time: 8:30 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunny, No clouds, Light Breeze Summer Shows Signs of Surrender to Fall We arrived a little late again this morning to an environment that was an absolute clone of yesterday. The only difference was a little more bird activity. The Osprey were out in force gliding up and down the Arkansas River looking for fish and making darn sure they were out of my range. There were a couple of Belted Kingfishers also working the far side of the river. One of the photographic prizes that has eluded me these past eight…

Environment:Start Time: 8:15 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunny, No clouds, Light Breeze Summer Returns along with Some Favorites Bright sunshine and clear skies have made a comeback at Lake Pueblo State Park. The Rabbitbrush was blooming with real conviction in the morning sun (today’s featured image) and the birds were very active but as shy as ever. My quest for shots of smaller birds was unsuccessful again this morning but I managed to get a couple of good shots of the larger variety. Early on in the walk I spotted what I took to be a Great Blue Heron…

Environment:Start Time: 8:35 AM Temperature: 43 degrees Sky: Heavy Fog, no breeze Foggy “Summer” Morning The weather seemed promising this morning when I set out but as soon as I got out of my neighborhood I realized that there was a good bit of fog lurking about. Even so I decided to throw caution to the wind and head for Lake Pueblo State Park anyway. When Whisper and I arrived we discovered a gloomy scene and it was a bit chillier than we have become accustomed to over the Summer. I took one picture of the fog rising off of…
