Environment:Start Time: 9:10 AM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, noticeable breeze A surprisingly warm morning got me out of the house early today. Another cloudless sunny day. The recent cold weather has pretty much stamped out the color from the leaves rendering them all a rusty brown. With scenic shots, therefore not a real option, I am back focusing on wildlife. And the wildlife is focused on staying well out of range. My two successes of the outing are today’s featured image of a Red-Tailed Hawk (who was perched well up in the trees) and the image below…

Environment:Start Time: 10:35 AM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, light breeze This morning started out quite a bit warmer than yesterday allowing me to head out before lunch. I took my time and enjoyed a long walk. On the way into Lake Pueblo State Park I happened to see two Mountain Bluebirds flying across the road. This is another type of bird that spends its Winter here. I have high hopes of getting a chance to photograph one of these this season. When I hit the trail with camera in hand the bigger birds were nowhere to be…

Environment:Start Time: 1:35 PM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunny, no clouds, noticeable breeze A long four-day stretch of wicked cold and snow that has kept me stuck at home finally broke today. I made it out to the river after lunch and was surprised to find the trails much drier than I had expected. Dry trails were not the only surprise that greeted me this afternoon. As I walked past the Anticline Fishing Pond I noticed that out toward the middle of the pond a Western Grebe was happily feeding. For the past several years I have seen a Grebe…

2020 Autumn Scenic Gallery

Certain world-wide issues conspired to keep me much closer to home this year. As a result my 2020 Autumn images are exclusively from Lake Pueblo State Park. That is not to say that this color isn’t every bit as spectacular as that found in other Southern Colorado venues. It just goes to prove that Cottonwood and Ash trees can hold their own against Aspens any time.

Environment:Start Time: 1:15 PM Temperature: 65 degrees Sky: Sunny, high clouds, no breeze Colder mornings always lead to later walks. Really quiet out at the river, birdwise. Peoplewise things were hopping. Once again I was armed for scenics and closeups which, obviously, was a good decision. The color is starting to tone down as we get deeper into Autumn, though the problem may simply be the lack of the morning low angle light. Today’s images are on the boring side. The featured image is some more Autumn (non-Aspen) leaves and below I have posted yet another portrait of Liberty Point…

Environment:Start Time: 8:15 AM Temperature: 52 degrees Sky: Intermittent sunshine, high clouds, no breeze Pleasantly warm this morning and, from my kitchen window, apparently quite sunny. These circumstances led me to decide to focus on shooting the Fall colors instead of birds. This meant I arrived at Lake Pueblo State Park with my vintage wide-angle lens attached to the GX-85. The funny thing was that the second I set foot out of the car the sunshine dimmed significantly due to a thick layer of high clouds drifting in. The light necessary for capturing decent color was only occasionally available. I…

Environment:Start Time: 9:45 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunshine, high thin clouds, no breeze Much better light this morning though the birding opportunities were about as bad as yesterday. The biggest bird I saw was a distant Osprey. Since the colors were popping I tried to come up with some foliage shots even though I was configured for birding on the GX-85. My best (least worst) shot is the featured image above. I was also carrying my Kolari ZS100 infrared camera this morning and I did get some interesting results with that. The image posted below is what the Autumn…

Environment:Start Time: 9:45 AM Temperature: 62 degrees Sky: Sunshine filtered by high clouds, light breeze Temp this morning was a bit warmer so I got out to my normal walking area on the North bank of the Arkansas River mid-morning. Very high and somewhat heavy clouds really dampened what sunshine actually made it through. If that wasn’t disappointing enough the birds were just not real active. Those that were out had better things to do than pose for me. One highlight came near the end of my tour as a couple of Osprey started hunting for a meal at the…

Environment:Start Time: 1:20 PM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunshine, high clouds, light breeze Woke up this morning to a below freezing temperature. This is the time of year when my walking time switches from AM to PM. But I did make it out to Lake Pueblo State Park after lunch. The light was not what I have grown used to with the Sun much higher in the sky – flattening everything out. In the spirit of change I decided, on the spur of the moment, to hike today on the south bank of the Arkansas River instead of my usual…

Environment:Start Time: 9:45 AM Temperature: 41 degrees Sky: Sunshine, high clouds, light breeze Started a little late the morning thanks to the early morning freezing temperature. Forty degrees is my cutoff for outdoor walking/photography. I have found that my wildlife photography is much better when I can feel my hands. I don’t know if the birds have similar temperature requirements or if there is some other reason that so few were out and about this morning. Those who were around wanted nothing to do with me. The only decent shot I got this morning is today’s featured image of a…
