Environment:Start Time: 8:50 AM Temperature: 60 degrees Sky: Sunshine few clouds with a light breeze Memorial Day weekend was off to a ripping start this morning at Lake Pueblo State Park. When I arrived I noticed a number of families had already set up shop around the Anticline Fishing Pond and were focused on some fishing. The Arkansas River was another story. There were a few serious fishermen out in the high water but not as many as a normal Saturday morning. I saw only one duck on the river today – no, not a Mallard – a Common Merganser….

Environment:Start Time: 7:40 AM Temperature: 58 degrees Sky: Sunshine few clouds with a light breeze Today’s outing was really quite mellow. I only saw five or six ducks on the river and I was only able to identify Mallards. The Geese were keeping to the shore – today’s featured image is of one group having a little meal by the river. Flowers are starting to bloom. Posted here is what Google identifies as Salsify. Pretty sure it is just a weed but a pretty one. There were a lot of really little birds Wrens and Warblers but they were too…

Environment:Start Time: 8:25 AM Temperature: 55 degrees Sky: Sunshine no clouds with a light breeze Took yesterday off to let Lake Pueblo State Park dry out from the heavy rain that fell the day before. Everything was looking good under a cloudless sky and, even though the Arkansas River is still running high, the Canada Geese were back out on the water. A pair of Osprey were on the hunt over the Anticline Fishing Pond as I arrived this morning. I saw (and tried unsuccessfully to photograph) a couple of strikes but the Osprey, like me, came up empty handed….

Environment:Start Time: 7:30 AM Temperature: 57 degrees Sky: Sunshine and clouds with a light breeze The Sun finally decided to rise above the clouds in the East allowing me to make it out to my normal haunt a little earlier than usual. My hopes of catching “Early Birds” devouring worms were crushed because very few birds were taking advantage of the sunshine. Once again only a few Mallards and a couple of Blue-winged Teals were willing to step into the Arkansas River. I did see some Wood Ducks but they were sitting in a tree. What geese I saw were…

Environment:Start Time: 8:00 AM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunshine few clouds with a light breeze Got out a little earlier today to nearly ideal conditions though the trails are still a little muddy. The Arkansas River was quite high again this morning. Only a couple of Mallards and a Wood Duck couple were brave enough to try their luck on the swift water. The geese were huddled in groups on the river’s edge keeping a wary eye on me as I slowly passed keeping a wary eye on them. I heard a lot of unfamiliar bird calls today but really…

Environment:Start Time: 9:00 AM Temperature: 50 degrees Sky: Cloud filtered sunshine with a light breeze Two more days of unsettled weather have finally given way to another great day for walking. You can tell we got some pretty good rain by the number of large puddles on the trails and high, swift water moving in the Arkansas River. I only saw one Mallard and two Wood Ducks who were willing to try their luck on the river. Today’s featured image (above) is a Wood Duck Hen that I caught hanging around what I believe to be her nest. No ducklings…

Environment:Start Time: 7:50 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sun and clouds with a light breeze Got started a little earlier this morning which was a good thing because the increasing cloud cover had really subdued the sunlight by the time I had finished my walk. Today was another day of lots of loud bird chatter and few actual photo opportunities. The ever increasing foliage is making bird spotting tougher, too. But I still did okay in the photo department. The featured image is a Double Crested Cormorant perched high over the Arkansas River. “He” looks like he is making Cormorant…
