Sharp-shinned Hawk at Lake Pueblo State Park in Colorado

The only word to describe this morning’s weather is perfect. I saw Starlings, Sharp-shinned Hawks and Osprey all working on their nests. Of these the most interesting were the Osprey. Their nests are built entirely of sticks and can be quite elaborate. I had always wondered where they got these sticks as I have never seen an Osprey bouncing around on the ground looking for them nor have I ever seen one carrying branches in their mouths like other birds do. Last Spring I found out where they get their materials and I witnessed the same process again today. What they do is get up a good amount of speed flying low at treetop level and they break dead branches right off the top of a tree with a quick grab! It is amazing to watch since they are not always successful in breaking their selected twig and have to let go quickly. Today’s featured image is of a successful attempt with the Osprey heading back to the nest with a good sized branch. Another success is posted below. Also posted today is a Sharp-shinned hawk and a Gadwall Duck taking flight.
