Osprey takes flight at Lake Pueblo State Park in Colorado

The sunny weather that greeted me as I woke up this morning started to deteriorate as noon approached. So I adjusted my walking plans and decided to have a stroll by the river before lunch. My flexibility was greatly rewarded when I spotted what I first though was a Red-tailed Hawk perched high up on one of the (too many) power poles that march through Lake Pueblo State Park. I did not change my mind about the bird until I heard him/her speak out clearly. This was an Osprey! The first of 2021! I was really excited and then he took flight and I got a couple of good shots. He (universal “He”) flew right toward me talking all the time. I’m not sure if the cries were attempts to chase me off or what. But the commotion brought a second cry from over the horizon and within seconds another Osprey flew into the area. Obviously I had stumbled upon a mating pair hard at work setting up this year’s homestead. From what I later saw they appear to have decided to nest on one of the nesting stations provided by the State of Colorado. You can bet I will be keeping an eye on their progress!
