Environment:Start Time: 7:15 AM Temperature: 60 degrees Sky: Sunshine thin clouds with little breeze Not a lot going on at Lake Pueblo State Park early this morning. Another good day in terms of seeing and hearing birds but not so great in the photography department. I saw quite a few Osprey flying around – I have posted one photo here of a pair who seemed to be in some kind of chase activity. Don’t know if it was for fun or not. A pretty good sized group of Mule Deer turned up which was nice to see – I think…

Environment:Start Time: 7:30 AM Temperature: 57 degrees Sky: Sunshine with a light breeze Wall to wall sunshine was the order of the day. Lots of bird chatter in the trees and bushes but not too many appearances. The Swallows and Osprey were all content to do their thing high up in the sky. The Wrens and Blue Jays preferred sitting deep in the tree branches, the Kingbirds were all perching well off the trail and the owls were content to sit in mixed light making my job harder than it had to be. Both Owl portraits here were saved by…

Environment:Start Time: 7:15 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunshine thin clouds with a light breeze Excellent weather continues. The trees were filled with bird chatter and the Starlings were flitting all over the place but really there was not much bird activity this morning. I did come home with some interesting pictures despite the avian drought. First off I surprised a mother Wood Duck who was giving duck lessons to her brood of nine and so managed the photo posted below. The Arkansas River was running very high today so I found this group in a calmer drainage tributary leading…

Environment:Start Time: 7:30 AM Temperature: 55 degrees Sky: Sunshine and clouds with a light breeze The holiday weekend is long gone and the rain has let up so it was time to head out to Lake Pueblo State Park once again. Things were looking good out there and the mud was far less than I expected. On the birding front today was a bit different than usual. The Arkansas River is still quite high (because of the rain) so I only saw one Mallard, one Cormorant and two Common Mergansers out on the water. I ran across a group of…

Environment:Start Time: 8:50 AM Temperature: 60 degrees Sky: Sunshine few clouds with a light breeze Memorial Day weekend was off to a ripping start this morning at Lake Pueblo State Park. When I arrived I noticed a number of families had already set up shop around the Anticline Fishing Pond and were focused on some fishing. The Arkansas River was another story. There were a few serious fishermen out in the high water but not as many as a normal Saturday morning. I saw only one duck on the river today – no, not a Mallard – a Common Merganser….

Environment:Start Time: 7:30 AM Temperature: 48 degrees Sky: Sun and clouds with a light breeze Out the door early again today. Beautiful conditions prevailed. Activity, both human and animal, was surprisingly low for a Friday. I guess the stars of today have to be Wood Ducks. They were the only ducks in the Arkansas River and pretty much the only birds that I could see perched. Posted here is a WD couple sitting in a Cottonwood getting ready for their day. What I don’t know is if the hole in the tree below them is their nest – really doesn’t…

Environment:Start Time: 9:35 AM Temperature: 48 degrees Sky: Sun and clouds with a light breeze Morning fog kept me waiting today but finally this bright shiny orb burned through and I decided to try another walk. There was a lot of chatter all around me as I walked but it was confined to the trees and prairie with no one coming out to sing for a photo. The Swallows were swarming the Arkansas River again today and were still tough to photograph. I tried but failed. Not much else was going on in the river – only a few Mallards…

Environment:Start Time: 10:50 AM Temperature: 47 degrees Sky: Overcast with a light breeze A long lasting miserable pattern of wet/cold weather is finally starting to move out of the area. Not a minute too soon, either. I had to wait a little longer than usual for the temperature to hit tolerable levels (and I was hoping for the Sun to break out) but I did make it out to Lake Pueblo State Park for a long walk. The stars of today’s post are the hundreds of Swallows – Violet-green and Barn – that were swarming over the Arkansas River. I…

Environment:Start Time: 7:45 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny with light breeze When the local weather forecaster predicts an 84 degree high temperature for the day – I get to the park as early as possible. Walking and photography conditions could not have been better. Well, a few more cooperative birds wouldn’t have hurt. But I did see a lot of birds so heading out early did pay off. Today’s featured image demonstrates Spring’s progression. The blooms on the Prunus Americana are giving way to the leaves. I was also fortunate enough to capture an in flight shot of a…

Environment:Start Time: 9:30 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny with some clouds and pesky breeze My outing this morning was a little unusual. When I got out of my car to start I immediately heard the unique chirp of an Osprey. It took a little looking about but I finally spotted the source pretty high up – an Osprey carrying a stick. Then I heard another Osprey who came into view and then another and then another. I guess today was some kind of Osprey festival because before I knew it there were eight Osprey circling high above the parking…
