Environment:Start Time: 2:45 PM Temperature: 67 degrees Sky: Sunshine and clouds – weather closing in. Quickly deteriorating weather greeted me this afternoon. I didn’t do a morning walk because of pretty heavy cloud cover. The Sun finally popped out and burned off those clouds but by the time I started my walk clouds were building back in from the West. I don’t know if the birds at the park had already hunkered down ahead of the coming change in climate but they were noticeably not present. I did catch a European Starling checking out a hole in a tree in…

Environment:Start Time: 2:45 PM Temperature: 68 degrees Sky: Sunshine I’m starting to wonder if the current warm temperatures are driving the birds off in search of a place to cool off. Things were pretty quiet at LPSP this afternoon. I was hoping to find some smaller, cooperative birds to test out my vintage Olympus E-1 camera with its flash attachment. This rig requires me to get pretty close to my subject but I got no volunteers today. So today’s featured image is a late Winter image of whats left of last Summer’s sunflowers with the Arkansas River shimmering in the…

Environment:Start Time: 3:05 PM Temperature: 43 degrees Sky: Sunshine and occasional breeze A long four day stretch of brutally cold temperatures has finally come to an end allowing me to apply my standard cure for “Cabin Fever”. Only one of the adult American Bald Eagles was anywhere to be seen but I had two photo sessions with it before s/he headed off (today’s featured image) to bluer skies. That American White Pelican is still staked out in the middle of the Arkansas River and I caught a Mallard couple (below) poking around in some freshly thawed gook on the river’s…

Environment:Start Time: 9:10 AM Temperature: 40 degrees Sky: Sunshine light breeze Forecasts of a warmish afternoon made me decide to take a chance on a morning walk today. This turned out to be a pretty good decision. Apparently I was not alone in this course of action as the park and the Arkansas River were pretty busy. Today’s featured image shows just how busy the river was with humans and pelicans competing for space. The eagles are still haunting the fishing pond though no one was in the mood to dazzle me with a display of fishing prowess. Still, this…

Environment:Start Time: 2:50 PM Temperature: 45 degrees Sky: Sunshine, wicked breeze. What looked like a unseasonably warm January afternoon ended up delivering an uncomfortably cold walk. I am amazed at my ability to head out into nature with the wrong clothes on. I could have put on my jacket but the first bit of breeze hit me when I was some distance from my car and I decided (wrongly) to tough it out. I did do my regular full tour and I was very happy when I made it back to the warmth of the car. The real bummer of…

Environment:Start Time: 2:40 PM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunshine, few clouds, light breeze. Yet another terrific day to be out in nature. A lot more of the smaller birds were active today as you can tell by the “small” gallery posted below. I was also using a more appropriate camera today than I was yesterday – but it was still heavy. Instead of a featured image I am trying to sneak in a featured video – hopefully posted above. If you can’t see it here on HSC.com try viewing it here. What it is is a group of ducks –…
