Environment:Start Time: 6:00 AM Temperature: 61 degrees Sky: Sunny. Having managed to get out to Lake Pueblo State Park with the rising Sun I am really starting to wonder where all the Early Birds are. Is there a worm shortage? Once again, today’s walk ended up with mostly smaller birds burned onto my memory card and even they made it tough. I did see a couple of the Cooper’s Hawk kiddos but they are expanding their range of activity and improving their ability to not be seen. So the featured image for today is a Lesser Goldfinch that I caught…

Environment:Start Time: 6:10 AM Temperature: 58 degrees Sky: Sunshine. You can’t win ’em all. Even with another spectacular morning I managed to come home with not even a handful of decent photos. Only one of the fledgling Cooper’s Hawks was visible this morning and it continued its practice of perching in the shade. I’m only posting the shot (below) because I thought the Common Grackle would be lonely without a little company. But today’s featured image kind of makes up for everything. I saw these two Belted Kingfishers (on the other side of the river, of course) who were involved…

Environment:Start Time: 6:35 AM Temperature: 62 degrees Sky: Brilliant Sunshine. I went. I saw. I came home. Today was one of those rare outings where I had a great walk but took no photographs. The only activity I saw was a great distance away. So for a featured image I am posting a shot that I took yesterday of a male Belted Kingfisher. Shortly after taking this shot he made a dive into the Arkansas River and then flew off with whatever he caught. I did see Betty and Barney, the Barn Swallow couple, back at the kiosk by the…

Environment:Start Time: 9:35 AM Temperature: 45 degrees Sky: Sun and clouds with wind-like breeze. With hopes of beating the predicted high winds I headed out for a morning tour of the Rock Canyon Area of Lake Pueblo State Park. The temperature was decent and the fairly stiff breeze (wind preview) did not seem to add to the Spring chill in the air. What the breezy conditions did provide was quite a few Red-tailed hawks who were having a great time soaring and wheeling over the park. Today’s featured image is one of those hawks taking flight after a brief rest…

Environment:Start Time: 9:10 AM Temperature: 40 degrees Sky: Sunshine light breeze Forecasts of a warmish afternoon made me decide to take a chance on a morning walk today. This turned out to be a pretty good decision. Apparently I was not alone in this course of action as the park and the Arkansas River were pretty busy. Today’s featured image shows just how busy the river was with humans and pelicans competing for space. The eagles are still haunting the fishing pond though no one was in the mood to dazzle me with a display of fishing prowess. Still, this…

Environment:Start Time: 2:25 PM Temperature: 64 degrees Sky: Sunshine little breeze The weather finally broke my way and allowed me to get out for my first walk of 2022. The combined effects of the recent cold, snow and wind have left Lake Pueblo State Park in pretty good shape. I only saw a couple of new-fallen trees and the trails were almost completely free of ice and mud. The bird population still seems low to me. I got one long shot of a male belted kingfisher who was perched on the other side of the Arkansas River. Today’s featured image…
