Environment:Start Time: 2:25 PM Temperature: 64 degrees Sky: Sunshine little breeze The weather finally broke my way and allowed me to get out for my first walk of 2022. The combined effects of the recent cold, snow and wind have left Lake Pueblo State Park in pretty good shape. I only saw a couple of new-fallen trees and the trails were almost completely free of ice and mud. The bird population still seems low to me. I got one long shot of a male belted kingfisher who was perched on the other side of the Arkansas River. Today’s featured image…

December 02, 2021

Environment:Start Time: 8:35 AM Temperature: 48 degrees Sky: Sunshine with light breeze. December is starting out on the warm side. I mean walking along the river in a T-shirt is not what you would expect. Not complaining though. Activity is picking up, too. There were a lot of American Robins darting in and out of the trees along the Arkansas. I think this was a group of migrants stopping for a rest. They were popping down to the water for some pretty long sips of water as pictured below. I also saw a couple of Belted Kingfishers working the river…

Environment:Start Time: 9:05 AM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sun with few clouds. Check out last year’s walk on this day HERE. Cool starting temperatures gave way to enough radiant heating to make me regret wearing a heavy sweatshirt by the end of today’s walk. Still pretty nice conditions for late November. Bird photography turned out to be just OK with most birds seen only in flight and pretty far away. I was surprised to catch a couple of House Finches (posted below) checking things out. I had to take their pictures since they were standing pretty still and had graciously…

Environment:Start Time: 9:10 AM Temperature: 43 degrees Sky: Sunshine, Chilly again this morning at Lake Pueblo State Park. Still a good day for walking by the river. Animal activity, though still low, is starting to pick up. I spotted what I am pretty sure was a Hooded Merganser and there was another new duck that I couldn’t identify. I shot today’s featured image just as I arrived for my walk. It demonstrates how the local wildlife is becoming (too) comfortable with the human visitors at the park. Still, it’s kind of funny. The two pictures posted below are also kind…

Environment:Start Time: 9:20 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Cloud and Sun with a light breeze. Check out last year’s walk on this day HERE. Fifteen degrees warmer, a little more sunshine and a lot less breeze really can make a difference. Once again I was out walking in a T-shirt instead of the heavy sweatshirt I wore a couple of days ago. Great walking conditions all around. The colder temps of yesterday have really done a number on the Autumn color. Most of the trees are bare and the wind took down at least one tree that I saw. The…

August 16, 2021

Environment:Start Time: 7:10 AM Temperature: 62 degrees Sky: Sunshine, haze with increasing breeze. Another morning encased in wildfire haze. No air quality alerts which I don’t understand since Pikes Peak was not visible from Reservoir Road as I drove into Lake Pueblo State Park. Still not a lot of birds who seemed inclined to be photographed. I shot a lot of smaller birds but did not end up with anything really good. Most of these little guys only gave me one chance to make the capture. A Belted Kingfisher taunted me by landing on my side of the Arkansas River…

Environment:Start Time: 7:05 AM Temperature: 68 degrees Sky: Sunshine, haze with light breeze. Yet another okay day for walking. Still hazy and a little humid though the Sun’s heat was tempered by these conditions. Bird activity was pretty tempered as well. Today’s featured image of two Canada Geese is one I shot on August 7 and didn’t have room to post. Glad I saved it. Below is that Solitary Sandpiper that I’ve been trying to capture all month. He is always on the other side of the river and really seems to know when I am pointing a camera at…
