Environment:Start Time: 7:30 AM Temperature: 44 degrees Sky: Sunshine high clouds with light breeze Back again on the morning tour. Lots of activity and chatter. My little owlet buddy was still in the nest but all I could see was his bum so I didn’t bother taking a picture. I did manage to get shots of a couple of the smaller more active warm-season park residents – they are posted below. For today’s featured image I have a Canada Goose who was quietly floating in the Anticline Fishing Pond. I think I caught a quick glimpse of an Oriole as…

Environment:Start Time: 7:45 AM Temperature: 61 degrees Sky: Sunshine high clouds with light breeze Not much bird activity this morning despite the wonderful conditions. Not too many clouds or too much wind. Every bird I got a look at was either perched way up in the trees or flitting about deep in the budding foliage. So today’s images are all long shots. The featured image is of a group of Double Crested Cormorants who have elected, this season, to keep tabs on the Arkansas River from a perch near the Anticline Fishing Pond. I also spotted a pair of Kestrels…

Environment:Start Time: 7:50 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunshine with light breeze Another sunny cloud-free morning at Lake Pueblo State Park. I arrived early enough to avoid a lot of people but apparently also early enough to avoid the birds. Not much activity – even at any of the nests. I am also a little bummed by how few flowers are blooming. Today all I saw was some Milkvetch (below) and it was pretty ratty. I’d say it was a pretty slow day but I did come home with a good number of pictures. Today’s featured image is of a…

Environment:Start Time: 7:55 AM Temperature: 48 degrees Sky: Overpowering sunshine with light breeze What a difference a day makes! Instead of all clouds, today it was NO clouds. Most of the birds were pretty busy today – not many took the time to pose for me. Today’s featured image is what could be a Rock Wren – its a Wren for sure. I tried to capture a Swallow in flight but the results were not exactly award winning. While I was trying to photograph the Swallows I noticed an American Kestrel blast through the swirl of birds – trying for…

Environment:Start Time: 8:55 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Overpowering clouds with light breeze Almost did not go out this morning. The clouds were thick and getting steadily thicker. Like yesterday only worse. But I am really glad that I did not succumb to the depression emanating from the sky. Yesterday one of my spotters clued me in to the location of a Great Horned Owl’s nest and today I managed to locate it. Today’s featured image is of an owlet peering out at the world, wondering what that thing I was pointing at him was. I’ll be keeping tabs on…

Environment:Start Time: 7:55 AM Temperature: 56 degrees Sky: Sun and increasing clouds with light breeze Mellow morning at Lake Pueblo State Park. The Sun was pretty well out when I arrived but the gathering clouds had really dimmed the light by the time I had finished my patrol. Today’s featured image is a favorite subject of mine – a Barn Swallow sitting on an informational sign near the parking lot at the Anticline Fishing Pond. This bird and its mate (I like to think it is the same bird, anyway) have a cozy little nest built into the eves of…

Environment:Start Time: 7:50 AM Temperature: 59 degrees Sky: Sunny, few clouds with light breeze Another early morning with another warm day ahead. Pretty mellow morning with only the Starlings and Mourning Doves out and about in force. Today’s featured image is of the seed clusters that are decorating most of the Cottonwood branches. Below is a shot of a Red-winged Blackbird snacking on one of the clusters and I saw a couple of Yellow-rumped Warblers doing the same. An American Robin posed for me in really good light and I was surprised to see a Dark-eyed Junco – I thought…

Environment:Start Time: 7:45 AM Temperature: 46 degrees Sky: Sunny with light breeze When the local weather forecaster predicts an 84 degree high temperature for the day – I get to the park as early as possible. Walking and photography conditions could not have been better. Well, a few more cooperative birds wouldn’t have hurt. But I did see a lot of birds so heading out early did pay off. Today’s featured image demonstrates Spring’s progression. The blooms on the Prunus Americana are giving way to the leaves. I was also fortunate enough to capture an in flight shot of a…
