Osprey at Lake Pueblo State Park, Colorado

Birds in Flight!

What I thought was going to be another Ho-Hum outing ended up being quite successful. Once again the walk started with me thinking a search party should be organized to try and locate the birds that normally flit around the park. But today I can honestly state that my pictures took flight – well, the subjects did. I got a couple of great shots of a Double Crested Cormorant lifting up off the Arkansas River – one of which is today’s featured image (above). I also managed in-flight shots of a Red-tailed Hawk and a Redheaded Woodpecker. But the real action came at the end of the walk with a hungry Osprey doing some fishing at the Anticline Fishing Pond. He made a couple of attempts at a fresh breakfast but came up empty each time. This time I had better luck. Posted here is a shot of one of the dives just before the stealthy fisherman hit the surface of the pond. Those talons look pretty intimidating! Also posted is a shot of the same Osprey in flight (below).
