Summer Returns along with Some Favorites

Great Horned Owl enjoying the morning hours perched high in a cottonwood tree at Lake Pueblo State Park, Colorado.

Bright sunshine and clear skies have made a comeback at Lake Pueblo State Park. The Rabbitbrush was blooming with real conviction in the morning sun (today’s featured image) and the birds were very active but as shy as ever. My quest for shots of smaller birds was unsuccessful again this morning but I managed to get a couple of good shots of the larger variety. Early on in the walk I spotted what I took to be a Great Blue Heron perched pretty high up in the nest that I have been keeping an eye on all season. Once I got the bird into my viewfinder I realized that it was an Osprey. The resulting picture is not spectacular but I thought it was interesting. Later on I managed to sight a Great Horned Owl perched high in a Cottonwood tree a some ways off my usual trail. I had to, as quietly as I could, tramp into the weeds and fallen tree limbs to get close enough to get the picture. I still had to use the Lumix’s digital Tele-Extended mode (600 mm lens equivalent) to get this image. I’m not all that proud of the image but I was very impressed that I had seen the big guy at all.

Sightings:
Birds: Canada Geese, Starlings, Robbins, Flickers, Osprey, Great Horned Owl, Wren, Belted Kingfisher, American Kestrel, Crows, Turkey Vulture
Critters: Mule Deer

Gear: Lumix GX-85, 45-150mm
