The Arkansas River was literally swamped with fishermen and women whom I blame for the serious lack of waterfowl out floating around. There were very few ducks but about the same number of Pied-billed Grebes and American Coots as usual. Yes, the Pelican is still posted up on its favorite rock on the river. I walked East from the Highway 96 parking area along the trail that winds around the group of watersheds known as Valco Ponds. I was surprised at the number of other visitors who also managed to make it out as well. Snow is only present in the most shadowy areas and the trails are mostly mud free.
