July 05, 2020 – Repost

Still on R&R. Found this July 05 post from 2020. It is good to see the Mississippi Kite shot. These guys have not been around so much recently. We started on our walk today around 6:10 in 57 degrees and the sun behind a low cloud bank in the East. No other clouds were poised to offer any further resistance to the sun with only a small amount of haze and a very light breeze. As I expected the sun cleared the clouds just as we arrived on the river bank. The park was oddly unpopulated this morning I assume…

Environment:Start Time: 1:10 PM Temperature: 42 degrees Sky: Sunny, clear, light breeze What was supposed to be cold snowy day turned out to be a spectacular day for a walk and some casual birding. Though the birds were not totally on board with this feeling I did manage to get a few shots in. I had a real good shot at a distant Cooper’s Hawk but came up with a fuzzy mess. I’m still trying to figure out getting good focus on distant subjects – gonna keep trying. The other disappointment of the day came at the wings of a…

Environment:Start Time: 8:00 AM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunshine, few clouds, light breeze A steady ridge of high pressure hanging over Colorado provided another stellar day for photography and hiking. Of course, the environment is still hazy thanks to those pesky northern wildfires though it was not so bad this morning. Pikes Peak is still not visible. On the bright side, birds and Mule Deer were very visible. Today’s featured image is of a Flicker who had perched nearby while I was trying to capture an image of a Dark-Eyed Junco. I settled for the more cooperative Flicker. But the…

Environment:Start Time: 7:00 AM Temperature: 61 degrees Sky: Sunshine, no breeze A much nicer day for casual birding while waling in the park. Less haze, more sun, less humidity and more birds made for an excellent morning. Though there were not many of the larger birds around I did get a shot of a Flicker and a Juvenile American Robin. The real highlight was when I caught sight of a Long-billed Thrasher rummaging through some of the low brush along the Arkansas River. Not that I knew at the time that it was a Long-billed Thrasher – I only determined…

And the heat goes on… This morning at 6:10 it was a crisp 74 degrees with a lot of clouds and a little (very warm) wind. The sunshine was intermittent at first but gained a solid foothold by the end of the outing. Today’s walk was more productive, photographically, than it was yesterday. A number of birds were accommodating enough to pose for a picture or two. On the right is a Flicker who seemed quite interested in the branch he was working on. When I arrived at the fishing pond my favorite Barn Swallow “Barney” was at his usual…

No other clouds were poised to offer any further resistance to the sun with only a small amount of haze and a very light breeze. As I expected the sun cleared the clouds just as we arrived on the river bank. The park was oddly unpopulated this morning I assume because everyone was up late last night celebrating the Fourth of July. Hungry, Hungry Herons I, again, made sure to pass by the heron nest to see if…

Nothing but sunshine at Lake Pueblo State Park this morning. We started our short walk at 6:20 in a warmish 57 degree temperature. Practically no breeze to speak of and even though I was wearing only a single layer of clothing by the time I finished walking today I had worked up a bit of a sweat. With ideal shooting conditions all around me I encountered very few photo opportunities. As far as casual birding goes – only a single Flicker presented himself as a target for my camera and he was none too close. I did run across another…

Started walking today right around 7 AM under a mostly cloudy sky with temp in the low 50s. Only a single Osprey was working the fishing pond this morning. I watched him for a while just before we started out but all he did was circle – I did not get to see any fishing attempts. The other birds at the park were chirping up a storm but staying mostly out of camera range. I did encounter a cooperative Flicker who has provided us with today’s featured picture. Sightings:Birds: Starlings, Swallows, Barn Swallow, Mallard Ducks, Wood Ducks, Osprey, Cormorant, Canada…
