Environment:Start Time: 2:40 PM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunshine, few clouds, light breeze. Yet another terrific day to be out in nature. A lot more of the smaller birds were active today as you can tell by the “small” gallery posted below. I was also using a more appropriate camera today than I was yesterday – but it was still heavy. Instead of a featured image I am trying to sneak in a featured video – hopefully posted above. If you can’t see it here on HSC.com try viewing it here. What it is is a group of ducks –…

Environment:Start Time: 3:05 PM Temperature: 68 degrees Sky: Sun, few clouds. While some folks were out taking advantage of Black Friday deals, I, and a lot of others, was out taking an afternoon walk along the Arkansas River. I really kind of prefer late afternoon / early evening walks at Lake Pueblo State Park in the cooler months. For one thing it is usually warmer and the light from the lower angled sunshine makes for some great shots. Today’s offerings aren’t really good examples of those afore mentioned “Great Shots” but you have to deal with the subjects that present…

Environment:Start Time: 7:10 AM Temperature: 62 degrees Sky: Sunshine, haze with increasing breeze. Another morning encased in wildfire haze. No air quality alerts which I don’t understand since Pikes Peak was not visible from Reservoir Road as I drove into Lake Pueblo State Park. Still not a lot of birds who seemed inclined to be photographed. I shot a lot of smaller birds but did not end up with anything really good. Most of these little guys only gave me one chance to make the capture. A Belted Kingfisher taunted me by landing on my side of the Arkansas River…

Environment:Start Time: 10:45 AM Temperature: 47 degrees Sky: Sunny with light breeze The morning finally warmed up enough to get me off the couch and onto the walking trails at Lake Pueblo State Park. Things were pretty mellow today – I think everyone has their nests fixed up and are just waiting for the real work to begin. There was an adult Osprey in the nest by the Swim Beach but the four other nests I am monitoring (Starling (2), Heron and Sharp-shinned Hawk) were all unattended. No Robins were to be seen though I did catch a glimpse of…

Environment:Start Time: 8:40 AM Temperature: 45 degrees Sky: Sunny, light breeze A very pleasant morning greeted me upon arrival at Lake Pueblo State Park. Still a lot of nesting activity going on – especially the Starlings and the Osprey. It looks like a pair of Osprey are going to take up residence in last year’s new nest right next to the Swim Beach. I’ve seen activity there two days in a row now. I also saw a couple of Osprey checking out the nest that is built on top of a utility pole nearer to the Arkansas River right along…

Environment:Start Time: 8:35 AM Temperature: 44 degrees Sky: Sunny, clouds; annoying breeze Things a little cooler this morning which wouldn’t have been so bad if the punishing breeze had been missing. This was the kind of breeze that would feel great on a September afternoon but is not welcome on an April morning. It turned out that putting up with the cooler weather paid off. I spotted a Red-tailed Hawk perched in the Osprey Picnic area and headed over to grab some pics (one is posted below.) What happened next was really something. An Osprey swooped in and started after…

Environment:Start Time: 1:15 PM Temperature: 53 degrees Sky: Sunny, high clouds, light breeze We finally got a decent break in the weather and I, along with many others, managed to enjoy a great afternoon at Lake Pueblo State Park. There was a fairly good number of birds as well. In the first five or six hundred yards of my walk I saw Juncos, a woodpecker, a Belted Kingfisher and a Black Phoebe. All just too busy to stop and pose. I’m afraid today’s featured image of a White-breasted Nuthatch is pretty poor in the quality department but that is the…

Environment:Start Time: 7:40 AM Temperature: 56 degrees Sky: Sunny and blue, light breeze Technique for Bird Identification Another great walking day that produced little in the way of great bird photography. So I thought for this post I’d discuss a bit about the process I use to identify birds that I see or shoot for these posts. Basically I shoot two “types” of bird photos. The first type is the obvious attempt to capture the bird in all its glory for sharing on this and other websites. Today’s featured image (above) is definitely one of that type. These pictures are…
