Environment:Start Time: 3:40 PM Temperature: 41 degrees Sky: Heavy cloud-filtered sunshine Winter is finally starting to make its appearance. My fear is that it may be too late for some of the trees as demonstrated in the image below of a Starling perching in a Cottonwood that appears (to me) to be well into the Spring budding process. When the cold eventually shows up I don’t think things are going to go well for this – and quite a few other – tree. But there are still birds to be photographed. Posted here is a White-crowned Sparrow who waited patiently…

Environment:Start Time: 3:05 PM Temperature: 48 degrees Sky: Sunshine with few clouds and annoying breeze. A chilly, cloudy morning pushed today’s walk into the afternoon hours. Really a nice walking day for those with the foresight to dress appropriately – this did not include me. Thought I could get by with a T-shirt. I couldn’t. Things were fine when I was in the sunshine but once in a shaded spot with the breeze it was cold! Not a lot of bird activity there to reward me for my suffering. One exciting find was a group of Mountain Bluebirds flitting around…

Environment:Start Time: 9:25 AM Temperature: 44 degrees Sky: Cloud filtered sunshine. Walking conditions were much better this morning but birding conditions remain disappointing. I think yesterday’s wind blew away all the little birds. The bigger birds were keeping their distance today. The image posted below is an example of the kind of distance I’m talking about. I took the shot in hopes of at least making an ID of the largish bird I saw perched in the distant tree. I don’t usually post ID photos but this one is kind of intriguing because when I cropped in on my computer…

Environment:Start Time: 8:30 AM Temperature: 48 degrees Sky: Sunshine, few clouds and noticeable breeze Beautiful weather continued to please this morning at Lake Pueblo State Park. I’m not sure why the birds are not out enjoying it but I managed to come home with some (not sexy) postables anyway. The featured image is another Gadwall Duck enjoying the Arkansas River. She had several girlfriends with her on the outing. Posted here is a White-crowned Sparrow (says Google) who got my attention by sitting still in really nice light. I wish this bird would give lessons to everyone else. Below is…

Environment:Start Time: 8:50 AM Temperature: 40 degrees Sky: Sunshine, no clouds and light breeze I guess October has been saving it for a big finish! Today’s walk at Lake Pueblo State Park was as bountiful as it was beautiful. Lots of birds and critters were out enjoying a fabulous morning. There were a bunch of mostly cooperative smaller birds that I’ve posted in the bottom gallery of this post. One, the Lincoln’s Sparrow is a new bird for me and I guess the American Goldfinch is a female. I got another White-crowned Sparrow and a Red-winged Blackbird was snacking nearby….

Environment:Start Time: 9:10 AM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunshine, no clouds and light breeze Much cooler this morning but also a lot more bird buddies to chase around. Today’s featured image (above) is a White-crowned Sparrow who was just daring me to get his picture. A little perseverance paid off. Also present on or near the Arkansas River were quite a few Northern Flickers and a Ring-billed Gull (pictured below). The big surprise came near the end of my trek when I spotted a good sized bird flying right at me. I figured it was a Hawk as I started…

Environment:Start Time: 8:40 AM Temperature: 45 degrees Sky: Sunny, light breeze A very pleasant morning greeted me upon arrival at Lake Pueblo State Park. Still a lot of nesting activity going on – especially the Starlings and the Osprey. It looks like a pair of Osprey are going to take up residence in last year’s new nest right next to the Swim Beach. I’ve seen activity there two days in a row now. I also saw a couple of Osprey checking out the nest that is built on top of a utility pole nearer to the Arkansas River right along…
