Environment:Start Time: 8:00 AM Temperature: 49 degrees Sky: Sunshine with a light breeze Yet another terrific morning for walking. Things are really starting to perk up at Lake Pueblo State Park. Today I got positive sightings of a couple of Bullock’s Orioles and quite a few Western Kingbirds (one posted here). Today’s featured image (above) is an Ornate Tree Lizard that I caught sunning himself on a tree stump near the Arkansas River. A couple of Osprey were flying all over the place chirping their heads off and Canada Geese were out walking around with a number of pretty fresh…

Environment:Start Time: 7:50 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunshine with light breeze Another sunny cloud-free morning at Lake Pueblo State Park. I arrived early enough to avoid a lot of people but apparently also early enough to avoid the birds. Not much activity – even at any of the nests. I am also a little bummed by how few flowers are blooming. Today all I saw was some Milkvetch (below) and it was pretty ratty. I’d say it was a pretty slow day but I did come home with a good number of pictures. Today’s featured image is of a…

Environment:Start Time: 9:00 AM Temperature: 45 degrees Sky: Sunny, light to moderate wind A little cooler this morning with a very stiff breeze making things a little uncomfortable. Not many birds out and those I saw were having difficulty getting around in the wind. I, too, cut my outing a little short to get out of the wind. But I did notice that Spring is really trying to set in. Things are finally starting to bloom as demonstrated by today’s featured image of a Cabbage Butterfly on some blooming Mexican Plum (ID courtesy of Google Lens.) Pictured below is some…

Environment:Start Time: 8:30 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunny, No clouds, Light Breeze Summer Shows Signs of Surrender to Fall We arrived a little late again this morning to an environment that was an absolute clone of yesterday. The only difference was a little more bird activity. The Osprey were out in force gliding up and down the Arkansas River looking for fish and making darn sure they were out of my range. There were a couple of Belted Kingfishers also working the far side of the river. One of the photographic prizes that has eluded me these past eight…

Environment:Start Time: 8:15 AM Temperature: 54 degrees Sky: Sunny, No clouds, Light Breeze Summer Returns along with Some Favorites Bright sunshine and clear skies have made a comeback at Lake Pueblo State Park. The Rabbitbrush was blooming with real conviction in the morning sun (today’s featured image) and the birds were very active but as shy as ever. My quest for shots of smaller birds was unsuccessful again this morning but I managed to get a couple of good shots of the larger variety. Early on in the walk I spotted what I took to be a Great Blue Heron…

And the heat goes on… This morning at 6:10 it was a crisp 74 degrees with a lot of clouds and a little (very warm) wind. The sunshine was intermittent at first but gained a solid foothold by the end of the outing. Today’s walk was more productive, photographically, than it was yesterday. A number of birds were accommodating enough to pose for a picture or two. On the right is a Flicker who seemed quite interested in the branch he was working on. When I arrived at the fishing pond my favorite Barn Swallow “Barney” was at his usual…

Five days into Summer and things are definitely heating up. We started out this morning around 6:15 with a temperature of 60 degrees. When we were heading out of the park around 7:15 the temperature had risen to 64. The slight breeze and the scattered clouds helped make it feel pretty comfortable. I don’t know if it is the heat or not but the activity in the park was quite subdued today. Very little presented itself for digital immortalization. I did encounter a Mule Deer doe and what I thought might be her fawn (didn’t get a good look at…

Nearly cloudless skies provided for unrelenting sunshine this morning. Not even the hint of a breeze made the 57 degree temperature feel a bit warm as we started out at 6:15. Owls Save the Day Bird photography was quite lackluster this morning with the single highlight of a young Great Horned Owl perched serenely on a tree branch. I was attracted to this particular tree by the sight of another horned owl flying in under heavy bombardment from a number of smaller birds. The beleaguered owl took cover on a branch covered with heavy foliage and so was impossible to…

The sky this morning had a very slight haze that only slightly mitigated the strong sunshine. We began our walk at 6:30 in a calm 56 degree temperature under a cloudless (boring) sky. I guess the featured bird for today’s walk has to be the Bullock’s Oriole. I located two active nests and got some decent shots of the attending adults. I have been seeing these nests for years without realizing the brand of bird responsible. They are intricately woven sacks the hang from the branches of deciduous trees in the groves along the Arkansas River. I decided to take…
